Climate change has intensified pollen seasons, wildfires, tornadoes, and other disasters, resulting in higher levels of small particulate matter (PM). PM encompasses dust, pollen, mold, smoke, and combustion byproducts, with particle sizes ranging from 2.5 to 10 microns, depending on their source. For context, a micron is 1/1000 mm (1/25,000th of an inch). PM can enter the body via skin absorption and inhalation. Generally, PM particles do not pe*****te the skin immediately; they adhere to the surface, releasing various PM, gases, chemicals, and soluble elements. These can infiltrate the epidermis through hair follicles or a compromised skin barrier. The effects of PM on the skin and on various conditions, such as acne, are influenced by factors like immunity, age, environmental conditions, pollutants, and UV exposure, which can increase sebum production through inflammatory markers. Other skin issues, such as rosacea, hyperpigmentation, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis, may also be affected. Moreover, plant pollen can elicit a histamine response, acting as an allergen, potentially exacerbating existing acne lesions by increasing oxidative stress and fostering bacterial growth. Subclinical observations of the skin cannot always be determined and are, therefore, idiopathic. Individuals with a history of skin sensitivities should always be evaluated carefully at each visit. The message? Never take the skin at face value - our eyes cannot determine what may be manifesting through the CNS and neurodermetic conditions. Want to learn more? Experiencing winter skin woes? Dryness, itching and tightness? Time to adjust the products you use on your eyes, face, lips, hands, arms, legs, and feet. Due to increased home heating, colder temperatures, and low humidity, we experience TEWL (transepidermal water loss). Low temperatures and decreased humidity lead to alterations in skin barrier function and an increased potential for dermatitis. Inflammatory responses activate cytokines and cortisol, prompting an influx of mast cell responses. In turn, the skin becomes more reactive to allergens and irritants. Inefficient barrier protection increases TEWL, and alterations in the skin microbiome increase skin barrier health instability. Naturophoria focuses on skin barrier health and offers head-to-toe skin support and solutions for winter skin concerns. The Skin & the Microbiome : A physiological understanding of the skin microbiome is necessary to gain insight into microbial involvement into skin disorders - as the colonization of the microbiome is influenced by the skin’s surface ecology. Since the microbiome is a major contributor to normal cutaneous immune system function, it is subject to imbalances of skin microorganisms, which can and are associated with skin pathologies. Dysbiosis (also referred to as dysbacteriosis) refers to a microbial imbalance or maladaptation of the flora on or inside the body and may be attributed to exogenous and endogenous factors. There is a vast complexity of circumstances surrounding the development of skin disorders and and in particular - acne and the many sub-types of acniform presentations. The relationship of acne, sebum and the microbiome is also a complex synergistic relationship. It is not always clearly determined whether an imbalance in the composition of the skin microbiome leads to pathologies of the skin - or whether underlying host factors or pathologies result in skin microbiome dysbiosis. Profoundly - it is also more complicated than the discontinuance of foods such as dairy, sugar or gluten components - as each composition of the internal flora and microbiota is unique to each individual, and biomarkers should be ascertained. Additionally, an abnormal barrier and an elevated surface pH are universal characteristics of almost all inflammatory skin disorders, including all presentations of the adult eczemas, psoriasis, and related cornification disorders. Erin Madigan -Fleck NMD / Naturophoria

Welcome to my business page! I am a naturopath, esthetician, licensed esthetic instructor, national educator, lecturer and author. My practice Naturophoria, specializes in the holistic and integrative approach to dermatological skin care, and skin wellness using Dermatherapy principals. Dermatherapy combines naturopathy, nutritional coaching and integrative skin therapeutics to address some of the most common and problematic skin conditions. The goal is to create “homeostasis” to the skin and not just address the management of symptoms. Through consultation & evaluation, emphasis is placed on addressing the biological dynamics and arriving at a comprehensive program to address individual needs. The protocols that are utilized include both holistic and integrative approaches to encourage skin health and vitality. Functional cosmeceuticals, biocompatible skin products, and both traditional & alternative protocols are also an integral part of dermatherapy.
