Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is an innovative and minimally invasive procedure designed to treat achalasia, a condition characterized by impaired esophageal motility. During a POEM procedure, an endoscope is passed through the mouth and into the esophagus, allowing the surgeon to create a tunnel in the inner lining. Subsequently, the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter are cut, enabling better passage of food and fluids. This technique offers a less invasive alternative to traditional surgical methods and often results in significant improvement in swallowing function for individuals with achalasia. POEM has shown promising outcomes in terms of symptom relief and has become an increasingly utilized approach in the management of this challenging esophageal disorder.
