A Heartfelt Angel Flight Soars Story

Dear Angel Flight Pilots,

There truly are not enough words to express what you have done for me — but I hope this letter carries even a fraction of the gratitude I feel in my heart.

When I made the journey for life-saving surgery, it wasn’t just one flight. It was multiple planes, multiple pilots, multiple strangers who each chose to say “yes” to helping someone they had never met. Each of you carried me on a different leg of that trip — and together, you carried me toward survival.

I spent months in and out of the hospital and ICU. My organs were beginning to shut down. No doctors wanted to operate. I was dying, and nobody wanted to step in and offer comprehensive help. If I had not made it to that surgery, I would not be here today.

And that’s where you come in.

Each of you gave your time, your aircraft, your skill, and your compassion to make sure I could reach the surgeons who ultimately saved my life. When it was time for you all to bring me home to Atlanta, I was again awestruck of the compassion and care that I was given.

Because of you, I didn’t just survive. I was able to return to the work I love. I went back to saving lives as an EMT. I went back to my nursing job, caring for patients the way others once cared for me when I was at my weakest.

Your kindness didn’t just impact me — it continues to ripple outward into every patient I treat, every student I teach, and every life I now get to touch because I was given another chance.

To you, it may have been one mission among many. To me, it was everything.

In the darkest season of my life, when my body was failing and fear felt overwhelming, you reminded me that there is still goodness in this world. That strangers can become miracles. That angels truly do fly — sometimes on different planes, at different times, but all united by compassion.

Because of all of you, I am still here.
Because of you, I am back to serving others.
Because of you, my story didn’t end.

Thank you for helping save my life.
Thank you for giving me my future back.
Thank you for choosing to care.

We'd be remiss if we didn't acknowledge Amelia Earhart. Born July 24, 1897, Amelia was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland! In her own words, "Never interrupt someone doing something you said couldn’t be done.”
