Please join me THIS Thursday for a virtual fundraising effort to support the work of The Nia Project at Grady Hospital. Many of you know I have served as the chair of this organization’s board for several years now and wholeheartedly support their work in providing FREE individual and group therapy to women survivors of intimate partner violence and suicidality.

The annual fundraiser has always been an opportunity to win highly coveted items like spa services, hotel stays, original art, and more, while supporting this necessary work.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month and this cause is near and dear to me, both professionally and personally. As a clinical psychologist I deal with su***de risk often and have a first-hand account of how YOUNG suicidal clients can get. It is no longer an older white male phenomenon. It is affecting communities of color in dangerously silent ways, and is reaching our youth in staggering numbers. This cause is personally relevant for me because two years ago my godbrother shot himself in the head and changed our family forever. The pain of being a psychologist and not being able to “save” your loved one is devastating, and something I continue to wrestle with. I do not want anyone to experience that pain.
For the past two years I have had the honor of chairing the Community Advisory Board for The Nia Project, a non-profit organization that offers FREE individual & group therapy for women survivors of intimate partner violence and suicidality at Grady Hospital here in Atlanta, GA. During my tenure we have annually sponsored training to the public on ways to decrease suicidal risk in our families and community. Please join us virtually this year on Saturday September 26 from 10a-12p (EST) as we welcome licensed social worker Lawanna Barron of Valdosta, GA to host this vital QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training. All participants will earn a 3 yr certification as a QPR Gatekeeper, useful both professionally and personally. But more importantly all participants will walk away feeling more confident in their ability to intervene in challenging conversations where su***de risk in friends, loved ones, and colleagues is suspected.
