I’m constantly getting questions about cupping, what’s it for, how does it work, does it hurt, can it help me??
Here’s the facts…
Cupping has been around for the last 500 years, though the methods have changed the results are the same.
Method- cupps are applied to area of heightened sensitivity (trigger points), usually targeting insertion/origin points of muscles. Using a small pump the air is taken out of the cup thus sucking up the skin around that area. The pressure from the cups causes the capillaries (small oxygen rich blood vessels just below the surface of the skin) to burst/leak oxygen rich blood to the surrounding area. Which causes the appearance of a bruise hence the discoloration.
Purpose
- improve circulation by increasing oxygen rich blood
-reduce trigger point hypersensitivity
-promote mobility an restore normal range of motion, partially due to the removal of scar tissue on the tendons/muscle belly.
-removes unwanted toxins in the muscle by promoting lymphatic drainage
Common uses for cupping
-Tendinitis/tendonosis
-frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
-trigger points (areas of heighten sensitivity) muscle shorten an are stuck in contracted phase
-headaches (tension headaches)
Common questions
-does cupping hurt - there is mild discomfort for a couple minutes but patients usually dont mind cause the results are worth it.
-how long do the marks last for - 4-10 days on average depending on factors such as blood thinners, age, nationality, and clotting factors of your blood.
