Four Chaplains Day honors the four chaplains aboard the SS Dorchester during WWII. The Dorchester, a troop ship carrying approximately 900, was struck by a German U-boat on February 3, 1943. The 4 Chaplains were a Methodist minister, Reformed Church minister, a Rabbi, and a Catholic Priest. After handing out out all of the remaining life jackets to the soldiers and helping them board the lifeboats, the 4 chaplains linked arms, sang hymns, and said prayers as they went down with the ship. May they rest in peace.

Ruth E. Heilig, age 73 of Elk Horn, Iowa, died at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. Ruth was born on October 31, 1952, to Walter and Lillie Sievers of Atlantic, Iowa. Ruth attended country school and later Pymosa school outside of Atlantic, Iowa.
