Cass County is now ranked #1 for the highest cancer incidence rate in the state of Iowa, according to the Iowa Cancer Registry. Simply put, this means that we have the highest rate of new cases of cancer in Iowa.

This isn't the news we hoped to share—but it is something all of us need to talk about.

If you're interested in learning more and helping take action — please join us for the Cass County portion of the Cancer in Iowa: 99 Counties Project on Wednesday, December 3 at the Cass County Community Center. Registration details are below.

Launched by the Iowa Cancer Registry, Cancer in Iowa: 99 Counties Project is an initiative to make sure every county in Iowa has access to the latest cancer data and information. The goal of each presentation is to give local leaders, healthcare providers, and residents the tools they need to act—whether that means boosting cancer screening rates, supporting caregivers, or advocating for better access to care. This presentation is made possible by partnerships between the Iowa Cancer Registry, the University of Iowa College of Public Health, the Iowa Cancer Consortium, University of Iowa Health Care Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Iowa Rural Health Association.

Meet Amber! She's an Occupational Therapist in our Rehab Services Department.

What is your favorite work memory or experience from your time here at Cass Health?
I have truly enjoyed participating in the Glow & Grow events that Cass Health has put on. I tend to have a little stage-fright, but those events have made public speaking a lot more fun!

Would you rather work in a quiet office or a lively one with music playing all day?
I love our lively office, where my co-workers are all friends and quiet is not normal. And yes, there is music playing all day!

What is the most unusual item in your workspace?
There is a hair mannequin doll in my office that has thrown off a few coworkers who pass by. Sometimes she’s staged, most times she’s just hanging out on our bookshelf. I have the doll head for a legit reason – work on fine motor and hand coordination with outpatients who have goals for doing their own hair– it’s not my fault if she gives a little fright every now and again! 😉

What do you like to listen to on your commute to and from work?
Usually I listen to audiobooks, but often times I find myself halfway home and realized that I have been sitting in silence (maybe that’s where my silent office actually resides).

If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
Let’s wine and dine, Taylor Swift!

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Pizza – so many combinations!
