Holiday Travel Tips for Kids with ASD
Holiday trips can be exciting—but they can also bring unexpected challenges for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Here are simple, helpful travel strategies to keep your journey smooth and stress-free:
1. Prepare Ahead With Visuals
Show pictures of the airport, car, or destination to help your child know what to expect.
2. Pack a Comfort & Sensory Kit
Include favorite toys, snacks, headphones, fidget tools, or a blanket to help them stay regulated.
3. Practice Transitions
Do small “practice trips”—like sitting in the car or walking through a terminal in advance—to ease anxiety.
4. Build in Break Time
Plan short breaks for movement, quiet time, or calming activities during the trip.
5. Prepare a Simple Script for Questions or Needs
Teach phrases like “I need a break,” “That’s too loud,” or use a communication card.
