There’s nothing like the burrito!

Rolling a child up snugly in a blanket—often called the "burrito roll"—is a favorite tool in occupational therapy. While it looks like a simple game, it provides powerful sensory input that can help a child feel grounded and organized.
Why It Works
• Deep Pressure Touch: The snug wrap provides consistent proprioceptive input to the entire body. This helps the brain understand where the body is in space, which is often very calming for children who feel overstimulated.
• Calming the Nervous System: Deep pressure can trigger the release of dopamine and serotonin, helping to lower cortisol levels and move a child from a "fight or flight" state into a "rest and digest" state.
• Body Awareness: For children with sensory processing challenges, the firm boundaries of the blanket help "map" their limbs and torso, improving their internal sense of self.
• Regulation Tool: This is an excellent "reset" activity for a child who is experiencing a sensory meltdown or struggling to transition between high-energy and low-energy tasks.

Using a scooter board to push a weighted ball while the feet prowl the body forward is a powerhouse move for sensory integration and motor planning.
Why It Works
• Heavy Work: Pushing the weighted ball provides deep pressure to the joints, helping with body awareness and regulation.
• Reciprocal Movement: The feet "prowling" mimics a crawling or walking gait, which strengthens the hips and improves bilateral coordination.
• Core Power: Staying balanced on the board while managing an external weight requires intense abdominal engagement.
• High Level Planning: The child must synchronize pushing the ball with their hands and pushing the board with their feet.

Dribbling a ball to the side while walking is a powerhouse move in occupational therapy. It goes far beyond basic coordination.
Why We Use This Move
• Core Stability: Forces the child to keep a steady trunk while the arm moves independently.
• Visual Tracking: Challenges the child to use peripheral vision to monitor the ball while looking ahead to walk.
• Brain Body Connection: Pairs a rhythmic hand strike with a walking gait, building complex motor planning.
• Body Awareness: Helps define the midline and improves spatial orientation.

Ever wonder why some movements seem like a constant uphill battle for a child? This reel shows a great example of what it can look like when primitive reflexes remain present.
In this specific position, you can see the child struggling to straighten his elbows. This happens because the moment his core activates, it involuntarily triggers a reflex in the elbows. When these early movement patterns stay active, they can interfere with more complex motor skills and functional strength.

This patient is working on strengthening her brain. There’s a lot going on with this one exercise- primitive reflex integration, vestibular strengthening, core strengthening, balance, coordination and more!
