It’s finally here!

The Touch for Health Class I have been promising you! Touch for Health is a simplified version of Applied Kinesiology, which is the essence of my practice for over 40 years. Touch for Health (TFH) was developed by my mentor, John Thie, DC, fifty years ago and is a system for everyone to enjoy practical skills to improve the health of yourself, families and friends. You will learn muscle testing, a form of biofeedback, to identify and correct imbalances in body systems as well as where and how to rebalance the body’s energy. TFH is an effective and simple technique to improve posture, performance, help ease pain and even fulfillment of goals in ways you may never have thought possible. This course will leave you with information and skills to optimize your health, long after I’m gone.

I will be offering two 4 hour ‘Touch for Health Introduction’ classes, offered from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, beginning Saturday, January 15 and repeated on January 29, 2022. A second class, entitled Top 10 Pain Relief Techniques will be offered January 22th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM (and possibly again on February 5, 2022). We will meet at my office, where I can accommodate a maximum of 10 students per class, so please respond as soon as possible so I will have enough time to order materials. Each class will be offered for $38.00, which will include your workbook, and must be prepaid.

A comprehensive 60 hour course, entitled Touch for Health 1-4 will be divided into four weekends, will begin February 11-13, February 25-27, March 11-13 and March 25-27, 2022. Covid 19: Vitamin D3 Myths and Facts

So much confusion exists surrounding the fear of contracting a disease, as well as its prevention and treatment. You may have heard that Vit D can treat Covid 19 virus, or that Vit D can boost immunity? So I'm compelled to relate facts and context to help you understand how our immune system responds to the "Right Stuff"!

A study of over 200 patients in Asia, by GrassrootsHealth, identified a direct correlation between Vit D levels and severity of infection. The mildest CV19 cases had highest levels of Vit D. Another study of almost 800 patients found a 7-fold higher risk of death if Vit D levels were below 30ng/ml and 12 fold higher if below 20 ng/ml! Please be aware that Vit D is an immune system modulator with "healthy levels" now considered to be 50-80+ ng/ml, so being just over 30 ng/ml will help protect you from Ricketts disease, but could leave you vulnerable to infection!

Research in the past 20 years focused on what DOSAGE will treat or prevent a disease, contributing to confusion about Vit D role in health. Ask the wrong question, get the wrong answer! The goal of GOOD research would be to attain a certain level of Vit D (measured as 2(OH)D), and see how that level affected immune response. Unfortunately, the levels of Vit D that are RDA recommended are still based on a level needed to prevent Ricketts, a disease resulting from poor calcium intake or absorption. Ricketts is almost unheard of in the US, yet the RDA remains fixed too low, while the recommendation for a "healthy level" doesn't reflect current research that supports the immune system most benefits at a level between 50-80ng/ml.

So, besides helping to prevent Ricketts disease, Vit D provides many benefits to immune function, protecting against respiratory disease and viral infections. Recall that the most important factor is the Blood Levels of Vit D, not the daily dose. The literature points to an optimal range between 50-80ng/ml. Based on the Archives of Internal Medicine, 75% of adults are below 30 ng/ml and 90% are below 40 ng/ml! Also, as we age, we lose some ability to synthesize Vit D from sun exposure. Supplementing Vit D may be necessary for some, but you need a blood test to know!

Want to get tested? You can participate in the GrassrootsHealth personalized nutrition project, which includes a Vit D test kit, or you can request your yearly exam with your physician or with me, to include the Vit D test. A real good time for the test would be in October, since you will not get much Vit D from the sun again until May. What you have stored from the summer of sun exposure will have to sustain you until Spring. Ever wonder why more colds and flu happen in Winter and Spring? It’s because depleted and low Vit D stores lead to an ineffective immune response!

Many hospitals report the CV19 virus affects dark skinned people more severely than light skinned. Here's the most plausible explanation (it's NOT racism!) It’s important to understand that darker the skin (with more melanin) requires more sun exposure (than light skin) to make adequate levels of Vit D. So the fact that more dark skin people are more severely affected is more likely due to Vit D deficiency playing a role in this racial disparity; although nutrition, obesity and diabetes rates also contribute to immune dysfunction. Unfortunately, I know of no recent studies looking at the role of Vit D levels in dark skinned patients with CV-19.

Recent studies show Vit D effective at strengthening the lung tissue, which helps protect against lung infection and inflammation. Vitamin D also has a clear effect on your immune system, which is your first line of defense against bacteria and viruses, ie, your T-cells, and natural killer cells. So, immune system deficiency results with low blood levels of Vit D coupled with lifestyle stressors. The CV-19 virus damages RBC's ability to carry oxygen and releases free iron into the blood, resulting in devastating inflammation of lungs (cytokine storm) and reduces oxygen to organs and brain. Too many damaged RBC's is why some patients don’t get better with ventilator treatment.

Another reason Vit D may be low, in any race individual, is lack of cofactors. Magnesium (Mg) is necessary to convert the sun’s UVB rays to Vit D. So if you are in the sun frequently, don’t use too much sunscreen and still have low Vit D by October, you are likely deficient in Mg. Unfortunately, the standard blood serum Mg test will likely hide a deficiency in your cells. We use a lab that tests the nutritional content IN the cells, not just in the serum. If you don’t want to spend the money on the SpectraCell test, add Mg Glycinate, or another highly absorbable form, at 100-500mg/day. Please ask me about different forms, since some cause loose bowel and some are not very absorbable.

“HOW TO AGE WELL” ~~ DNA, Mitochondria Energy and NAD+

“Along with age, comes wisdom”, the saying goes. But also comes joint and muscle pain, hardened arteries, deteriorating memory, etc. This article is about the REASON we experience symptoms of aging. The reason we age has to do with simple math: we begin the process of breaking down faster than we can repair. In youth, our DNA repair is robust and accurate, but as we get older, that process gets inefficient and we break down. But is this normal or just COMMON, since we all observe the aging process as degenerative?!

Since our DNA contains the programming for QUANTITY of life (how long we CAN live), the chemistry of DNA repair we experience, determines the QUALITY of life we live. When DNA is replicated, trillions of times each day, the copies in the new cells may contain errors, due to toxins, drugs, radiation, EMF’s, processed (denuded) foods, chronic high stress, etc. Fortunately, our DNA has a maintenance and repair team to fix errors, to keep us healthy. This repair process is THE reason we age well, or not.

DNA repair is largely dependent on NAD+, a molecule found in the mitochondria, the energy producing part of the cell. Over time, the DNA repair process can slow down due to depletion of NAD+, causing cells that become senile (yes, it’s a thing!). You see, if the DNA is duplicated in a new cell with errors, it doesn’t function well, or at all. In youth, these ‘senile’ cells are destroyed quickly by our White Blood cells. But due to failure of the DNA repair process, the senile cells can proliferate and cause inflammation, overwhelming the WBC’s ability to reduce them, and THAT leads to deteriorating joints, muscles, arteries, heart, kidney….and everything, until we die (prematurely) or want to die.

While it may sound like I’m about to tell you about the true “fountain of youth”, the result of recent research indicates we can restore our mitochondrial DNA repair to bring back youthful energy, quick repair and robust health. The key seems to be in that NAD+ molecule. The molecule that makes the system HUM is a simple derivative of Vitamin B3, Niacin. Research has shown that increasing NAD+ levels in cells improves repair significantly. So, what’s the best way to do that and regain our youthful health? Read on…..

Since NAD is a product of B3, we can theoretically just take Niacin to accomplish higher cellular NAD. While this is true, Niacin has an unpleasant side effect of causing flushing of the skin at doses that are effective, and while it does result in increased NAD, Niacin and Niacinamide (non flushing B3) also inhibit sirtuins. Sirtuins are a type of protein that manages many cellular processes, and sirtuins are critical for cell maintenance and DNA repair. Because sirtuins, like mitochondria, rely on NAD for energy, we want to increase NAD and Sirtuin activity; and that is possible using B3’s cousin, Nicotinamide Riboside.

Research published in “Nature Communications” March-2018, finds that supplementation with nicotinamide riboside (NR), was able to raise NAD levels by 60% in older adults, and NOT inhibit Sirtuins. NAD allows the mitochondria and sirtuins in our cells to power all the processes that keep us alive. We want to increase NAD to restore robust repair, so using supplements containing NR will help to achieve that higher level. This research used a dosage of 1000mg NR per day.

Genetics professor at Dartmouth College, Dr. Charles Brenner, discovered stressed or damaged cells are actively looking for NR that they can turn into NAD to help repair themselves. NR is a natural substance. It can be found in trace amounts in milk. But you would have to drink 75 gallons of milk to get a recommended dose of NR -- even more if you are older or stressed.

NR is not as well-studied as Niacin, but 150+ studies are underway, and among those that have been completed are a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over human study showing that NR is both safe to take and effectively increases NAD levels. Some of the conditions being studied to improve or prevent human diseases with NR replenishment are: Alzheimers, Heart Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Breast Cancer, alcohol-induced liver poisoning, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, organ injury from sepsis and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).

So, “along with age, come wisdom” and a need for supplementing Niacinamide Riboside. As always, contact me for more information on how to age well; your quality of life may depend on it!

CoronaVirus Conspiracy; What To Do?

Now that you have been pumped full of anxiety by the media, and told our only "hope" is a vaccine, ready in about a year, you ask "What can I do NOW?" First, as a doctor, I always promote protecting yourself first. You already know about washing hands, avoiding contact with elders or crowded places when you are ill. But there are some other things you may not know, that may have a bigger impact on your health.

First, keep your Vitamin D levels over 50nm/ul. I recommend blood testing Vit D levels in October. Unless you supplement, the Vitamin D you have stored by October is all you have until late Spring, when the Sun's UVB rays are at a sufficient angle to help you make Vit D in the skin. Vitamin D3 is actually a hormone, and an immune system modulator; meaning if you fall below a certain value your immune system will not work efficiently. So, if you have a low value in October, it will lower through Winter and Spring, causing a vulnerable immune system.

If you want to give your immune system a fighting chance, there are some basics; Eat foods rich in Vitamins A and C, as well as fermented foods to give the gut a good foundation for a healthy Biome. I also recommend ingesting a small amount of Organic Bone Broth and coconut butter or oil. These have immune building properties and well as anti viral activity. Eat plenty of Alkaline veggie and fruits, and/or supplement your diet with alfalfa, seaweed (PC= sea veges) and Chlorophyll rich foods. These will help you detoxify and keep your body pH in a healthy range.

Lastly, you need to know about Glutathione. This molecule is made in our body as an extremely potent antioxidant. In its reduced form, can neutralize a million times more free radicals than those found in food! The good news is you produce plenty when young; bad news is... you guessed it, the older we get the less we produce. But exercise increases Glutathione production, and so does ingesting 'undenatured whey'. My favorite though is a new sublingual lozenge that gets Glutathione in the system directly. Feeling poorly, pop a G-lozenge, with zinc, of course!

So choose your lifestyle carefully, don't tempt fate and mostly, protect your health and your rights! Your health is the most important defense against ANY contagion, not the government or your doctor, and certainly NOT the pharmaceutical industry! Healthy Aging: DNA Repair With AC-11
