“I was so thrilled to have Amanda, her son, a Direct Support Professional and a man they serve, join me in the Bates College Alumni Gym to watch the Bates Women’s Basketball Team win the first round of NCAA playoffs against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. She came because the many she supports loves basketball and she wanted him to have this exciting experience. Bates went on the next day to win the 2nd round NCAA game against Smith College is in the Sweet Sixteen in Pennsylvania tomorrow!! Amanda is one of my dearest friends and puts family, Community and people with disabilities as a priority.” - Bonnie Jean Brooks, founding President & CEO of OHI and lifelong advocate for the rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities. March is a special month for us at Happy Haven as we celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month — a time to honor inclusion, amplify voices, and recognize the unique strengths and contributions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

🌍 March Inclusion Challenge:

This month, we’re inviting our community, staff, families, and partners to participate in the Happy Haven Inclusion Challenge:

✨ Choose one inclusive action each week (or go all in and do one each day!)

Here are a few ideas to get started:

• Attend a community event that promotes inclusion
• Learn one new fact about developmental disabilities and share it
• Support a local business that employs people with disabilities
• Invite someone new to join you for coffee or an activity
• Highlight a DSP or team member who makes a difference
• Advocate — call or email a legislator about disability rights
• Practice person-first, respectful language
