It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of retired Deputy Chief Bill Mack, who died peacefully this morning, surrounded by his family. Chief Mack fought a courageous battle with cancer, and his passing is recognized as a Line of Duty Death due to occupational cancer.

Chief Bill Mack dedicated over 30 years to the fire service, beginning his career with the City of Auburn Fire Department in 1992. He rose through the ranks here at Valley Regional Fire Authority, serving in key leadership roles, including Battalion Chief. In 2021, he brought his experience and passion for mentorship to East Pierce Fire & Rescue as Deputy Chief, where he continued to make a lasting impact until his retirement in 2023.

Throughout his career, Chief Mack was a champion for training and development, teaching CPR and EMT skills, leading multi-agency regional training efforts, and helping shape the careers of countless firefighters and officers across King and Pierce counties. Bill also served as Vice President of IAFF Local 1352, District Representative for the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters, and a strong advocate for firefighter health, safety, and labor rights. His service extended far beyond emergency response, volunteering with organizations like the Nick of Time Foundation, always putting community first.

During his time at the VRFA, Bill was more than a courageous firefighter; he was a steady presence, a loyal teammate, and a true friend. His laughter, compassion, and quiet strength left a mark on every one of us.

In 2023, a recognition award was established in honor of Chief Bill Mack: “The Mack Award.” Throughout every stage of his career, Chief Mack exemplified enduring values: camaraderie, respect, kindness, inclusiveness, and a warm sense of humor. Those nominated for this award reflect the same traits that defined his leadership and character. We will continue to honor his legacy and the extraordinary service he gave to our department and the communities he served.

We will share further details regarding memorial services and ways to honor Bill’s life and legacy as they become available.

We extend our deepest condolences to his loving wife, children, and his tight-knit circle of family and friends who meant the world to him.

Valley Professional Firefighters shares in the sadness of the family, friends, and community of Puget Sound Firefighters Local 1747 member Captain Brandon Minneman, who passed away of an occupational cancer in the line of duty, on June 24.

Honoring Captain Brandon:

There are moments in this job—and in life—where you find a kind of perfection. It’s rare. Fleeting. So you chase it. You work for it. You try to hold onto it.

Brandon lived in that pursuit. He was a quiet professional—never asked for credit, just did the work, took care of his people, and showed up with purpose. He served in the Army with the 62nd Medical Brigade, started his fire service journey volunteering in Thurston County, and spent over 17 years with the Kent Fire Department now Puget Sound Fire. Most recently as Captain of Station 83 in Maple Valley, badge #268. He has held positions as part of our HazMat team, helped in training while always being leader, and a friend.

But this post isn’t just about his resume—it’s about what’s harder to put into words. What happens when someone who found meaning in service, in routine, in his family, his kids, his faith, and being part of a team?

Grief is hard to talk about. Especially when it lives close. When it wears a uniform. When it has coffee with you at shift change. When you see him with his family around town.

Brandon would never have called himself a hero. But he always did the right thing. He cared deeply about his crew, his family, and the job. We owe it to him—to each other—to carry that forward.

He will be missed. More than we can say.

Local 1747 and PSF can honor him by holding him as the example. More details to follow regarding service. For now we’ll hold the line and support his family and ours.
