Has your child been tested for lead? Lead testing is the only way to know for sure if your child has been exposed. Make sure your little ones are up to date!

Wishing all May babies a DINO-mite birthday!

New York State requires doctors to test all children with a blood lead test at age 1 year and again at age 2 years. A blood test is the only way to know if your child has been exposed. The lower the test result, the better.

Lead exposure can cause serious health problems, especially in young children. It can harm a child’s growth, behavior, and ability to learn.

Visit www.cayugacounty.us/NHFL for more information and be sure to have your child tested.

While planting a garden is a great way to incorporate healthy, inexpensive food into your family’s diet, did you know that soil can contain lead? Lead is a toxic metal that if inhaled or ingested can have negative health effects on people, especially children.

With garden season fast approaching, the location of your home and garden is something you should consider.

Some tips to plant your garden safely:
• Locate your garden away from the foundation of your home, or older painted structures, where lead-based paint chips may have landed if they fell.
• Grow plants in raised beds or containers filled with an uncontaminated planting mix.
• Plant an area that is far away from busy streets and highways, former industrial sites or areas where soil may have been exposed to old lead plumbing pipes.
• Wash your, and any little helper’s, hands after digging or planting in soil and remove shoes before entering your home to prevent tracking dirt in.
• Thoroughly rinse the soil off any produce that is grown in your garden before eating.
If you have concerns, your soil can also be tested at a lab. You can search online for facilities in your area. For additional information, please call the Cayuga County Health Department at (315) 253-1560 or visit https://www.epa.gov/lead/learn-about-lead
