Known as the “City of Murals,” Philadelphia claims more than 4,000 such works. Enjoying a tour of a selection of these public art projects, residents recently learned about the collaborations that gave rise to these grand-scale creations, the artists themselves, and the impact on youth art education within these communities. A big “thank you” to Mural Arts Philadelphia!

How do your friends and colleauges see you? We recently posed this question to members of our employee Ambassador Program, which showcases the culture at Shannondell and promotes our community as a great place to work. To break the ice in answering this month’s question, Ambassadors were paired off with the task of painting portraits of each other. Not only did the results bring “kicks and giggles,” but also closer connections that aren’t constrained by a six-inch screen. We give them all an “A!”

This “Carousel” took us for the ride of our lives, well actually of “Life.” Directed by Julianna Schauerman, our Actors Studio pulled out all the stops in this rollicking show celebrating life and love through comedy, dramedy, humor and farce. Adding well-placed (and played) song and dance, our resident thespians simply outdid themselves on stage for this recent production in the Performing Arts Theater. A great big “standing O” to the cast and crew, behind the scenes’ cheerleaders, Sue with MCT, and the Activities staff ... bravo!

Residents discovered where Rock meets Bach thanks to the recent TAKE3 concert in the Performing Arts Theater. Energizing not only the stage, but the entire theater, violinist Lindsay Deutsch, cellist Mikala Schmitz and pianist Jason Stoll lived up to pre-concert hype of a “must-see show unlike any other of our winter season.” Fantastic show ladies ... you rock, no Bach, no rock!

If our residents have anything to say about it, every day should be a “Sundae” at Shannondell. Enjoying a surprise pop-up ice cream bar with all the sweet fixings are a few residents and staff members caught in the act with their personalized Sundaes. We’ll take ours with Reese’s pieces, whipped cream and a cherry on top, please!

Our “crafty” residents recently hosted one of their seasonal Craft Show & Sale events. The creativity here is amazing. From handcrafted stitchery, pottery and dolls to jewelry, art, weaving and more, this fun event is a great opportunity not only for one-of-a-kind shopping, but also a little inspiration for residents to join one of our artsy groups. The Foundation at Shannondell also appreciates these events, with 10% of the proceeds benefiting local community causes. Thanks everyone!

Be sure to catch the exhibit “Patterns: A Photographers Among Us Show” which recently opened in the Shannondell Art Gallery. Focusing on the boundless patterns that form our periphery, this show highlights the impressive talents in photography, composition and digital retouching that reside here. You’ll find the pieces really pull you in! This show closes on Thursday, April 9th.

Showing off their moves in the Bradford Living Room is our Saturday morning Line Dance Class. Popularized by the Country music genre, line dancing has since broadened its appeal. And by combining low-impact cardio with coordination and memory stimulation, dancers reap both mind and body benefits. Ready to join in? All together now ... cross-back-side-front.

Dipping into their crafty side, our potters recently went all in creating snack trays, many incorporating dip pits. Instruction included both hand-formed and wheel-spun techniques ... and check out these cool designs. There’s no glazing over the creativity that resides here!

Fine chocolate? Velvety red wine? Yes, and yes! Attendance at our recent Chocolate & Wine tasting reflects the popularity and attraction of pairing these two sensorial delights. From a silky Pinot with milk chocolate to a powerful Cab with dark high-cacao chocolate, residents tasted and tipped to their hearts’ content, enjoying moments of pure harmony with each pairing.

Residents had a stompin’ good time on Fat Tuesday with Philly Stomp cranking out some great vintage New Orleans jazz on the Shannondell stage. Many thanks to Ed Wise, Dave Posmontier, Charly Salinger and Stan Slotter among other band members. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Who can resist white and dark chocolate covered strawberries and other desserts from the heart ... just in time for the feast of Saint Valentine? Based on all the residents who attended our first Epicurean class of the new year, very few can deny their sweet tooth. To all ... a happy Valentine’s Day!
