Message from Poison Ivy, Wolf & Passionflower

I’ve been sitting with the Earth. Praying, requesting guidance, and trying to figure out what I can do to help the world through all of this fu**ed up violence, supremacy, colonialism, and grief.

As I sit with poison ivy, wolf, and passionflower, they keep repeating one message to me: bring the people back to the Earth.

That’s my life’s work. To remind people to connect with the earth, with the spirits of the land, animals, and plants. And to actually get people outside and to commune with the land.

Every day, the pull grows stronger to use my voice, to teach, and to remind people of the connections we so desperately crave. The earth and its beings want to interact with us, but we have to do the work to invite them in and build those relationships.

We should not rely only on plants and animals when we are sick or in need. We should tend to them in times of wellness, both physically and spiritually, as relatives rather than resources.

We must return to our bodies, to presence, and to the living Earth, allowing beauty and connection to balance the fear, pain, and anger we carry.

Rather than doomscrolling into oblivion, something I am guilty of as well, let us choose to step outside, to touch the land, to listen to the plants & animals. In doing so, we nourish ourselves so we can show up with clarity, resilience, and purpose in our lives and communities.

🎉Exciting News🎉

I am thrilled to announce that I will be pursuing my Certificate in Native Plants through the
State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia. Although I already hold both a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Ecology, where I have studied and taught plant ecology, this certificate will allow me to deepen my knowledge even further. This continued learning will directly benefit those who take classes with me by providing more in-depth, regionally specific plant knowledge, stronger identification skills, and a deeper understanding of how native plants function within their ecosystems. I hope this will make my plant walks, classes, and offerings even more enriching and meaningful for those interested in the plant world.

Plants are whole stories, not just sentences.

Plants are more complex than most people give them credit for. Their effects on each and every body can be different. Just because they are natural does not mean they are safe for every person.

Herbs can heal and they can cause harm.

Plants are powerful enough to interact with your medications. They can increase or decrease their effectiveness, both of which can lead to disastrous results.

Plants are nuanced and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to herbal medicine.

Each person is unique, just like every plant is unique. At times, each of our uniqueness comes together and is well matched. And it is truly beautiful to witness. But other times, bodies are not be well-suited for certain plants.

Some people may have allergic reactions, or their unique body makeup doesn’t work well with a plant.

Working with a clinical herbalist can help you find the right herbs for your body, needs, and goals.

This is my life’s work, to study and know human bodies and plants deeply. Clinical herbalists are trained to understand these nuances with plants and the human body. We research, study, and practice helping people with herbs, not as a quick one sentence approach, but seeing both people and herbs in their whole stories.

DM me if you want to know more of what it’s like to work with me as a clinical herbalist.🌿

Warm regards,

Cheyenne Jolene Yates♥️
