Thank you to everyone who shared their time during Canvas Day at Allen Homes. Despite a rainy afternoon and a limited outreach window from 4–6 PM, 28 residents living in the 150-unit community welcomed us into meaningful conversations that helped move this work forward.
Canvas Day was a collaborative effort by Black Farm Street, Augusta Locally Grown, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, and the City of Augusta Housing Authority, all working together to listen, learn, and plan alongside the community.
We’re especially grateful to the 13 volunteers who came out in the rain to help canvas the neighborhood and connect with residents. Through these conversations, residents shared interest in actively participating in the building and care of their community garden, signaling strong community investment in shaping this space together. Tomatoes were the most requested crop 🍅
Families also took time to share information about the children who live on the property so future projects, including the Little Library, reflect the real needs of the community. In total, 65 children were reported across the property, spanning all age groups—from infants to older teens. This includes 4 children ages 0–2, 10 ages 3–5, 17 ages 6–8, 15 ages 9–12, 10 ages 13–15, and 9 ages 16–18.
We recognize that many residents were not home during canvassing hours, and this information represents an initial snapshot rather than a final count. The insights shared will directly guide next steps across garden planning, youth-focused programming, and age-appropriate book requests for the Little Library.
We’re grateful for the trust shown, the collaboration across partners, and the voices shared. This work continues because it is built with the community.
