Our videographer and volunteer for the day, Kamilah, caught us cleaning and prepping the shed for a new growing season. More to come!

It’s been a little quiet over here, but there’s been a lot happening behind the scenes.

At Black Farm Street, we’ve been focused on continuing to build, grow, and create meaningful opportunities for agriculture, education, and community connection. We’re grateful to share that we were recently awarded a grant from the St. Joseph Foundation, which will help support and strengthen this work.

Moments like this remind us that what we’re building is not only needed, but supported.

There’s a lot more on the way, including upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and new initiatives that we’re excited to share with you.

Stay connected. We’re just getting started.

Thank you to the Jack and Jill of America, Inc. - Augusta Chapter and all of our volunteers for spending time with us at the Concrete Farm this past Saturday.

It was a great day of learning and connection. Participants explored healthier food substitutions, learned about the importance of bees and pollinators, and had the opportunity to plant their own food or pollinator flowers to take home.

It was just as meaningful to see parents engaged, learning alongside their children, and enjoying the experience together.

We’re grateful for the energy, curiosity, and support that made the day so special.

Hey! Remember those huge bags of soil and compost that we got delivered recently? We are going to need help filling all of those beautiful garden beds with that soil and compost. If you are available on April 4, 2026, at 10:00am, then come on by Allen Homes and help us out. No experience necessary. Bring a bottle of water and closed-toe shoes. If you have your own gloves, then bring those too.

See you there!

What do beekeepers check when they open a hive after winter?

We suited up with the Briar Creek Bee Club for the first hive inspection workshop of the year

Frame by frame we inspected for:

• A healthy brood pattern
• Fresh eggs or larvae showing the queen is laying
• Honey stores left from winter
• Pollen stores for feeding developing brood
• Colony population and activity
• Signs of pests or disease
• Overall hive strength heading into the spring nectar flow

If you’ve ever been curious about beekeeping or want to learn alongside others in the community, this is a great place to start.

Next Briar Creek Bee Club Workshop:

Saturday, March 28 at 9:00 AM
550 Barnhart Dr., Waynesboro, GA

Thank you to Stephanie Scott and the Scott Family Farm for continuing to create a space where people can learn about bees, agriculture, and the power of pollinators together.

Plant the seed. Watch it grow. 🌱🐝

Thank you to Cross Creek High School for welcoming Black Farm Street to participate in your Career Day event, “Passport to Your Future – College & Career Fair 2026.”

We had the opportunity to connect with so many students, staff and organizations who are curious about agriculture and farming, and those conversations are always meaningful. We played a game and chose a sprout to clip to you. It was joyful to see the many sprouts walking around the gym!

Spending time with and alongside the FFA students was especially rewarding. Engaging with young people who are already exploring leadership in agriculture reminds us why representation and mentorship in this field matter.

We’re grateful to be part of the journey as students explore their future pathways and special shoutout to the amazing Luckie Charmz for all that you do to make this happen.

We had a great time introducing Black Farm Street Inc to our young leaders at Lucy C. Laney High School today. THANK YOU!

It is so important to show representation in the agricultural field to ensure that young people can see themselves as growers, educators, innovators, and leaders within our food systems.

When students understand that agriculture is more than farming; that it includes science, business, environmental stewardship, and community development, new possibilities open up.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to plant those seeds today.

Best questions from students today was, What does a potato seed look like? And can you grow potatoes from a seed?

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Allen Homes Community Garden Groundbreaking Ceremony.

Your presence made the moment meaningful.

We are deeply grateful to the residents of Allen Homes, our dedicated volunteers, and our collaborative partners; Augusta Locally Grown, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, and the City of Augusta for standing with us as we marked the beginning of this new chapter.

We also extend sincere appreciation to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office for their support and presence, as well as the city dignitaries and community leaders who attended to commemorate this milestone.

And thank you to our local news media partners for covering this moment and helping share the story of community-led progress throughout Augusta.

Yesterday was a reminder that when community, leadership, and partnership come together, meaningful change begins.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for believing in this work. And thank you for helping us break ground… Together.

Tomorrow we officially break ground at Allen Homes.

A moment that represents listening, care, and the start of something being built with the community.

This space has already been shaped by resident voices, volunteer energy, and collaboration, and we’re excited to take the next step together. If you’re planning to join us, come ready to get your hands a little dirty and be part of something meaningful.

We’ll see you tomorrow as we begin this next chapter.

Thank you to everyone who shared their time during Canvas Day at Allen Homes. Despite a rainy afternoon and a limited outreach window from 4–6 PM, 28 residents living in the 150-unit community welcomed us into meaningful conversations that helped move this work forward.

Canvas Day was a collaborative effort by Black Farm Street, Augusta Locally Grown, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, and the City of Augusta Housing Authority, all working together to listen, learn, and plan alongside the community.

We’re especially grateful to the 13 volunteers who came out in the rain to help canvas the neighborhood and connect with residents. Through these conversations, residents shared interest in actively participating in the building and care of their community garden, signaling strong community investment in shaping this space together. Tomatoes were the most requested crop 🍅

Families also took time to share information about the children who live on the property so future projects, including the Little Library, reflect the real needs of the community. In total, 65 children were reported across the property, spanning all age groups—from infants to older teens. This includes 4 children ages 0–2, 10 ages 3–5, 17 ages 6–8, 15 ages 9–12, 10 ages 13–15, and 9 ages 16–18.

We recognize that many residents were not home during canvassing hours, and this information represents an initial snapshot rather than a final count. The insights shared will directly guide next steps across garden planning, youth-focused programming, and age-appropriate book requests for the Little Library.

We’re grateful for the trust shown, the collaboration across partners, and the voices shared. This work continues because it is built with the community.
