As a reminder, if you are contacted by phone after searching for health insurance online, do not give out any personal or financial information until you confirm you are dealing with licensed individuals selling products from insurance companies licensed by the Bureau.

Some red flags to watch for during sales calls are:

The caller will not identify the name of the insurance company.
The caller claims to be an insurance agent but will not provide an insurance producer license number.
You are not given an opportunity to review the plan details prior to purchase.
The caller insists that you must make the purchase right away to get a low rate.
You are required to join an association or pay an application fee to purchase the plan.

It's the season of giving, but when it comes to your personal information and medical data, it's a good idea to double check before you share. Scammers know that people are busy and distracted during the holidays, but if you receive a call, email, or text that seems suspicious, it's worth your time to pause and investigate. Following these guidelines can help you protect yourself from medical identity theft.

• Be careful who you give your personal information to. This includes your Social Security number, Medicare number, credit card numbers, and even your driver’s license number.

• Use caution when your get unexpected texts, calls, and emails. Scammers might ask you to click on a link or reply with your personal information. Remember that DHHS, Medicare and Social Security will not call, text, or email to ask for your personal information. If you have any doubt about who sent a link, do not click it.

• Protect any documents containing your medical information by keeping them somewhere safe. Choose a drawer to hold your health insurance card, insurance enrollment forms, prescription bottles, and billing statements. When it's time to throw them away, use a permanent marker to cross out your information on prescription bottles and put your paper documents through a shredder.

Over 30 years of advocacy

Consumers for Affordable Health Care’s mission is to advocate for Maine people to be heard, respected, and well-served in a health system that provides coverage, access and quality, affordable care to all. We envision a Maine where all have the right to a healthy and financially secure future that is not threatened by the cost of health care. CAHC values integrity, compassion, equity, pragmatism, determination and collaboration.

In 1988 the Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC - pronounced cake) Coalition is formed to fight for better, more affordable care.

1989 CAHC helped design and pass the Maine Health Program, which served thousands of low income adults in Maine.

1990 CAHC led the campaign for a first in the nation state law to ban insurance coverage denials of coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Maine’s “Continuity of Coverage” law was a model for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
