More than half of Mainers are concerned they won't be able to pay for the prescription medications they need. Many say they have cut pills in half, skipped doses, or avoided filling prescriptions because they couldn't afford them.

Vincent DeMarco, President of Maryland Health Care for All is right. Prescription drugs don't work if people can't afford them!

“Prior Authorization” refers to a request for coverage for a medical service, test, prescription drug, medical equipment, or other services including care provided by an out-of-network doctor.

In most cases, a doctor will ask your health insurance if it will cover the service or medication needed. The health plan will decide if the service is necessary and will approve or deny coverage for the service.

If approved, the health plan will send you and your doctor a notice that the care is approved, as well as the dates to obtain the care or service.

If the health plan denies the request, a letter is sent to you and your doctor explaining why the request is denied. The health plan may say the service might not be medically necessary or the doctor did not provide enough information about the reason you need the service or drug. If your prior authorization request was denied, you can request to appeal the decision – asking for another review of the request. Call our HelpLine at 1-800-965-7476 for help understanding a denial and how to appeal it.

Families with children who are MaineCare members may be selected to participate in a survey about MaineCare coverage.

The Office of MaineCare Services is working with Market Decisions Research, a research firm based in Portland, ME, to collect feedback from families with children who are MaineCare members. The survey will ask about:
• Health care received by children covered by MaineCare.
• Your experience with your child’s MaineCare in the last 6 months.

Here are more details about the survey:
A small number of parents or guardians of child MaineCare members will be randomly selected to take part in the survey. If you are chosen, someone from Market Decisions Research will contact you by mail, email, or phone. The survey is voluntary and will take between 10-15 minutes to complete.

The information you provide will be kept completely private and confidential, and your answers will never be matched with you or your child’s name. Individual answers will never be seen by MaineCare, or anyone involved with your child’s care and will not impact your child’s eligibility for MaineCare. Participation in this online survey will help identify ways to improve services for all MaineCare families.

If you have any questions, please contact MaineCare Member Services at 1-800-977-6740 (TTY users, dial 711 for Maine Relay).

Are you getting help paying for coverage through CoverME.gov (APTCs or CSRs)? CoverME.gov may reach out to your employer to confirm you do not have job-based coverage options that you can afford. You will get a letter if your employer is chosen to be surveyed.

Don’t forget to update your CoverME.gov application if something has changed since you enrolled in coverage. If you didn’t have access to coverage you could afford through a job when you applied but can now get coverage through work, you should update your information at CoverME.gov. Have questions? Call our free HelpLine at 1-800-965-7476.

Over 30 years of advocacy

Consumers for Affordable Health Care’s mission is to advocate for Maine people to be heard, respected, and well-served in a health system that provides coverage, access and quality, affordable care to all. We envision a Maine where all have the right to a healthy and financially secure future that is not threatened by the cost of health care. CAHC values integrity, compassion, equity, pragmatism, determination and collaboration.

In 1988 the Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC - pronounced cake) Coalition is formed to fight for better, more affordable care.

1989 CAHC helped design and pass the Maine Health Program, which served thousands of low income adults in Maine.

1990 CAHC led the campaign for a first in the nation state law to ban insurance coverage denials of coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Maine’s “Continuity of Coverage” law was a model for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
