Disability Rights Maine

Disability Rights Maine Disability Rights Maine (DRM) is Maine's Protection and Advocacy agency for people with disabilities

DRM Board and staff believe that people with disabilities must:
* Be free from abuse;
* Control the decisions that affect their lives;
* Receive the services and supports necessary
to live independently;
* Have the opportunity to work and contribute
to society; and
* Have equal access to the same opportunities
afforded all other members of society.

As hard as this year has been and as sad as we all were to lose several of our peers to layoffs, it really was wonderful, and important, to have an end of year celebration with the indefatigable, zealous, scrappy and absolutely beautiful people that make up Disability Right Maine! (These are pictures of just a few of these amazing people! Hopefully my peers will add more?!)

Our friends at the Maine Youth Action Network (MYAN) are working to better understand what helps young people feel welcome in youth programs — and what gets in the way. To do this, we are helping them gather input from both youth and parents/guardians/caregivers across Maine.

These surveys focus on access challenges such as disability, transportation, cost, language, or any other barriers that make it hard to join or participate in youth programs. What people share will help shape future programs so they are more inclusive, supportive, and easier for all youth to access.

For more information and direct links to the surveys, please go to https://drme.org/youth-access-inclusion-survey/

Another update to share, this time from MaineHousing:

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, MaineHousing regrets to announce that the Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP) will not open on November 1 this year. ECIP, a key part of the Low-Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP), relies on federal funds that have not yet been authorized due to the shutdown. HEAP funds typically cover critical heating assistance programs, including the $3 million ECIP, which provides emergency aid to thousands of Maine households facing an imminent heating crisis.” For Winter Heating Resources, visit
