Strong Birth Journeys

Strong Birth Journeys Birth and Post Partum Doula serving the CSRA. I am honored to be serving Augusta and the greater CSRA as a birth and postpartum doula.

I am a DONA trained birth doula and will have my DONA certification completed in the near future. As a mother of two children myself, I believe that birth is truly a transformative experience and that all women deserve and can benefit from the presence of a trained female birth companion. It is my hope that all women can come to see birth as something to be anticipated with confidence, not something to be feared. As your birth doula, I will help provide resources and information regarding birth options, so that you can make informed decisions as to what is best for YOUR family. It is my desire to emotionally and physically support you and your partner through the birth process, whether that be unmedicated, medicated, or C-section. Each mother should have the opportunity to feel empowered throughout her pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. Once you have welcomed your new baby, you may need help with daily tasks so that you can recover from birth more easily and spend important time bonding with your baby. As a postpartum doula, I can offer breastfeeding support, run errands, perform light housework and cooking, and watch your baby or older children so that you can get the rest you need. My hope and goal is that you will truly feel that you experienced a strong beginning in your new life as a family. All I can say is, I’m glad to know it helped, cause I sang a LOT while pregnant. 🤣

Singing during pregnancy and to newborns has been shown to positively influence both brain development and emotional well-being.
It stimulates the fetus’s auditory and language centers, helping build early familiarity with the mother’s voice and sound patterns.
For mothers, singing reduces stress and anxiety, promoting a calmer and healthier pregnancy.
After birth, a parent’s singing soothes the baby, stabilizes emotions, and enhances bonding.
Overall, this simple act supports cognitive growth, emotional security, and connection between mother and child.

It’s a truth we’re only just beginning to fully grasp: the sheer, monumental energy required to grow a new life is staggering. For a long time, science had a somewhat simplistic view of pregnancy, but recent research is pulling back the curtain on what is arguably the most profound endurance event in the human experience.

Take the work from Duke University, for instance. They put the metabolic cost of pregnancy under the microscope and found that it doesn't just compare to an elite athletic feat—it rivals and even surpasses it. We're talking about the equivalent of running a marathon, but not just any marathon. This one lasts for 40 weeks straight. There's no finish line tape to break through, no medal at the end of the day. It's a continuous, sustained effort where the body is constantly building, fueling, and nurturing another human being from scratch.

And the numbers are just as breathtaking. A peer-reviewed study published in the journal Science crunched the data and landed on a figure that puts it into stark perspective: an additional 50,000 calories over the course of nine months. To think of it as just "eating for two" is a massive understatement. It's a deep metabolic commitment, with a whopping 96% of that energy coming directly from the mother's own body. It’s not just about the calories you consume; it's about the immense internal work your body is doing around the clock.

This isn't just about the energy spent on moving or being active. Perhaps the most telling detail is that a woman's resting metabolic rate—the energy her body burns just to keep her alive while sitting completely still—can shoot up by as much as 30%. That means her engine is idling at a significantly higher rate, day in and day out, even in her sleep. Her heart is working harder, her lungs are working harder, every system is in a state of elevated output. It’s a quiet, internal marathon that never pauses, a testament to a kind of strength that is both brutal and beautiful.
