Jack was the son of Robert Lee Mason and Willie Louise Ingram Mason, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Joyce Roberts Mason, the love of his life and devoted partner of 59½ years; his brother, Rev. Thomas E. Mason Sr. and his wife Thelma who were huge influences in the development of his faith; and his sister, Nina Lee Mason.
Jack and Carolyn built a life deeply rooted in their shared faith, their church family, and a sincere love for others. Their devotion to the Lord guided every aspect of their lives—how they served, how they loved, and how they welcomed others. Faith was not simply something they practiced; it was how they lived. Their home and their church were places of encouragement, hospitality, and steadfast Christian example. Together, they shared a deep love of travel and adventure. They proudly visited all 50 states and traveled abroad to Israel, France, and England. Though they especially cherished the beauty and spirit of the Southwestern United States, home was always Augusta, Georgia, where their hearts, church family, and loved ones remained.
He is survived by his three children: Kimberly Mason Threet (Stephen) of North Augusta, South Carolina; Jack Tarlton Mason Jr. (Susan) of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Travis Kevin Mason of Hephzibah, Georgia; as well as his brother, Robert (Bobby) Mason Sr. (Sharon) of Hephzibah, Georgia. He was a proud and loving grandfather to seven grandchildren: Stephanie Threet Burton (Jeremy), Trevor Ryan Threet (Genni Lib), Jared Travis Mason (Britani), Michael Zachary Mason (Triston), Jordan Paul Mason (Emily), Elijah Cole Mason (Cayla), and Jaythan Smith. He was blessed with twelve great-grandchildren: Connor, Chase, Chesney, Jensen, Stalvey, Gentry, Bethany, Dougie, Waylon, Jaxton, Gatlin, and Hardy, and he eagerly awaited the arrival of a great-granddaughter, Josie.
Jack retired in 2009 from the Savannah River Site, where he served with distinction as an accomplished Laboratory Technician supporting the Tritium Enterprise and the Defense Waste Processing Facility. He was known for his professionalism, dedication, and integrity.
A man of deep faith, Jack loved the Lord wholeheartedly and was extremely knowledgeable of the Bible, which he studied often and with great devotion. He was a faithful servant to his church throughout his life, always willing to sing, teach, encourage, or step forward wherever he was needed. Blessed with a powerful voice that filled the room, he sang in numerous churches, touching countless hearts with his deep, rich spiritual voice and sincere presence.
Jack also had a lifelong love of music and was an accomplished musician, playing both the guitar and the piano. He joyfully passed this gift of music—and the faith behind it—to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, inspiring generations through song, worship, and example.
In 2012, he earned a degree in Theology and faithfully preached as he was called, sharing God’s Word with humility, wisdom, and compassion.
If you met him, you liked him. If you knew him, you loved him.
Jack was a blessing to all who knew him, but especially to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, service, music, and respect—a legacy carefully built and shepherded through a lifetime of devotion, leadership, and grace. His influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Nelson and Barbara Roberts, Dennis and Amanda Lamb & the Broken Ministries Team, Bible Fellowship Church, Kenny and Jeanie Lamb, Diane Barrett, Jana Smith, Melinda (Voice behind the Box) and the Fifth-Floor Staff at Piedmont Hospital, the Affinis Hospice Staff and Nikki Byrd for their love, care, and support.
