This Black History Month, we’re proud to honor one of our own, Dr. Miriam Atkins, whose impact continues to shape cancer care right here in Augusta.

From serving as a Major in the United States Army to helping lead a bone marrow transplant program, Dr. Atkins has spent decades advancing oncology with excellence and compassion. Since joining AO Multispecialty Clinic in 2000, she has remained a cornerstone of cancer care in our community, providing expert treatment while advocating for patients far beyond the exam room.

Her influence extends into leadership, education, and advocacy, from mentoring future physicians to championing patient access through national organizations that fight for equitable cancer care. Locally, her dedication to Augusta is evident through her service, philanthropy, and continued commitment to community oncology.

Dr. Atkins represents what Black history in medicine looks like today, not just perseverance, but leadership, excellence, and lasting impact.

When it comes to managing osteoarthritis pain, many patients ask about natural options. 🌿

Some supplements like turmeric (curcumin), ginger, willow bark, and omega-3s may offer mild relief for osteoarthritis thanks to anti-inflammatory properties and while these options may help support joint health, they are not a replacement for prescribed treatment. Pain relievers such as NSAIDs or acetaminophen may still be needed, and supplements can interact with medications.

At AOMSC Rheumatology, we encourage open conversations about any over-the-counter products you’re considering so we can help you make safe, informed decisions as part of your overall care plan.

In 1852, Jackson Street Hospital opened in downtown Augusta as the first institution of record established solely for the care of African American patients. At a time when Black communities were largely denied access to medical care, this hospital represented a critical step toward treatment and survival.

While the hospital was founded and staffed by white physicians during an era shaped by racial inequality, its existence underscores the harsh realities Black patients faced and the urgent need for care in a segregated system. Though the building is no longer there, the history of Jackson Street Hospital stands as a reminder of the resilience of Black communities and the long, ongoing fight for equity, dignity, and access in healthcare.

As we continue to honor Black History Month, we recognize this site not as a celebration of systems, but as an acknowledgment of history and of how far medicine still has to go.

Meet Dr. David Jones Peck, the first African American to earn a medical degree from a university in the United States, graduating from Rush Medical College in 1847, despite living in a deeply divided pre-Civil War America.

After graduation, Dr. Peck practiced medicine and toured with abolitionists like Frederick Douglass, using his achievement to challenge racial barriers and inspire change.

Though his life was tragically cut short during conflict abroad, his courage helped open doors for future generations of Black physicians. Let’s celebrate Dr. Peck’s legacy and his role in expanding opportunity and equity in medicine.

In the United States, 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
That statistic isn’t just a number; it represents our friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors.

On World Cancer Day, we come together to honor those we’ve lost, support those currently facing a diagnosis, and stand beside survivors with hope and compassion. By raising awareness and advocating for patient-centered care, we can help create a future without cancer.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years and is still explored today as a supportive option for managing arthritis pain. Studies suggest it may help reduce pain and improve function for people living with osteoarthritis.

Acupuncture therapy is generally considered safe when performed by a trained provider and some patients choose to use it alongside conventional treatments as part of a comprehensive pain management plan. As with any therapy, it’s important to talk with your rheumatology care team about what options may be right for you.

At AOMSC Rheumatology, our goal is to provide patients with evidence-based information so they can make informed decisions about their care.
