What an energizing evening of connection and community. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who joined our game night for Black mental health clinicians at The Bohemian: A Wine Bar.

Over the course of the night, we created a relaxed, culturally centered space to connect, laugh, and decompress together—stepping out of the clinic and into a room full of Black clinicians who truly “get it.” Hearing people share stories, cheer each other on over Black-owned games, and settle into pure enjoyment was a reminder of how vital community and joy are to our professional resilience.

Thank you to all who attended and helped hold this space. Special thanks to The Bohemian: A Wine Bar for hosting us and to Beyond 50 Minutes: A Guided Therapy for supporting the event by covering a ticket.

Below is a clip from the evening. If you attended, please share your favorite moment in the comments—I’d love to hear what stayed with you.

If you’re interested in joining future gatherings for Black clinicians in Charlotte, please connect with me or send me a message; I’m already planning the next round of game nights and community events and would love to include you.

Last week, I had the honor of hosting a Brave Step support group for loved ones of survivors of sexual assault.

Having worked with sexual assault survivors for nearly 20 years, I continue to be deeply moved by the courage and resilience I witness in these spaces.

Brave Step provides a safe and compassionate community for both survivors and their loved ones—helping them heal, connect, and grow together. It’s a privilege to be part of that mission.

If you or someone you know is supporting a survivor, Brave Step offers support groups to help you through the healing journey. To learn more or access resources, please visit Brave Step’s website or contact them directly. You don’t have to navigate this journey alone.

If you’ve survived sexual trauma, you might be really good at pretending you’re okay.
You show up for work, for family, for everybody else. What family and friends do not know is how you feel when there are conversations about child sexual abuse or sexual assault. No one knows about the sleepless nights, drinking a bit too much, or numbness when engaging in various activities.

If that’s you, nothing is ‘wrong’ with you. Your nervous system has been in survival mode for a long time.

In my work with women healing from sexual trauma, we focus less on ‘fixing’ you and more on helping your body and mind remember what safety feels like again. Learning to trust yourself.

You get to move at your pace. You get to say no. You get to be believed.

If this sounds familiar and you’re in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, or South Carolina, therapy can be one place to start softening what you’ve been carrying.

If you have been through or are currently experiencing any of what is listed above, EMDR may be the therapeutic support best suited for you. In my experience, I have found during EMDR sessions that sometimes individuals realize they are unconsciously remembering details of traumatic experiences. EMDR helps you process disturbing memories and be informed by them rather than be controlled by them.

One of the great things about EMDR is that it can be done either in-person or during a virtual therapy session. EMDR therapy does not require discussing the topic at hand in great detail. With that being said, if the person across from me would like to go into detail, I do not dictate what is said and what is not. The beauty of EMDR is that the therapist remains “out of the way” as much as possible. Your EMDR session is truly your session—I will follow your lead.

In the coming days, I will continue sharing additional areas of concern where EMDR can be used.

Reminder: You don’t have to relive every detail of your trauma to heal.

After a traumatic event, it can feel like it is happening again, even years later. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain and body process stuck memories so they are less overwhelming now.

What might that look like? A less severe emotional response to the thought or memory of a traumatic or difficult memory. The ability to remain grounded and in the present whenever you are reminded of the past. You do not have to retell every detail of the traumatic event in order for EMDR to be effective. Each session is tailored to your comfort, ensuring you feel supported and collaborative while making steady progress.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about what EMDR is, what sessions look like, and who it may be helpful for. If you’re curious whether EMDR might be a fit for you, you’re welcome to reach out or drop a question in the comments.

It feels like I just said "Happy New Year" a few days ago! I realized my last post was “Happy New Year,” so it feels like a good time to reintroduce myself and share what I’ve been up to in my clinical work!

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC), providing virtual therapy to individuals who live in North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. In 2024, I completed training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based trauma therapy. Since then, I’ve been integrating EMDR more deeply into my work with clients who have experienced various forms of trauma, including childhood trauma, relationship and attachment wounds, racial and identity based stress, grief and loss, and other overwhelming life events.

EMDR helps the brain and body reprocess distressing memories so they feel less overwhelming in the present. Many clients appreciate that EMDR does not require them to retell every detail of their story in order to experience relief. This year, I’m continuing to grow my EMDR skills and will be sharing more about what EMDR is, how it works, and what it can (and cannot) help with. If you’re curious about EMDR or wondering if it might be a fit for you, feel free to drop a question in the comments or reach out directly.

Happy New Year!

While I hope the holidays were restful, they can also bring sadness for many. This may result from loss, relationship endings, or time with an unsafe family, emotionally or physically.

If you are experiencing sadness or difficulty this season, consider reaching out to a trusted individual or, ideally, a licensed mental health clinician for support.
