Happy Black History Month!

Long before the name Jack Daniel became famous, there was a man known as Uncle Nearest.

Nathan “Nearest” Green grew up in Lynchburg, Tennessee, in the mid-1800s, where he worked on the farm of a preacher and distiller in Lincoln County. It was there that he mastered the craft of whiskey making — especially the sugar maple charcoal filtering method now known as the Lincoln County Process, the defining technique behind Tennessee whiskey.

Nearest’s reputation as a distiller was so strong that he became the man trusted to run the operation. And it was on that same property that he met a young boy named Jack Daniel.

In the 1850s, Jack Daniel, orphaned at a young age, was sent to work as a chore boy for the preacher. Curious and determined, he kept asking about the smoke rising from the distilling area and the wagons moving back and forth. Eventually, the preacher took him there and introduced him to the man behind it all.

“This is Uncle Nearest,” he reportedly said. “He’s the best whiskey maker I know.”

From that moment on, Nearest Green became Jack Daniel’s teacher, mentor, and master distiller, showing him the craft and the filtration process that would later define the famous Tennessee whiskey brand.
