Sharing information about Project CANTER at the Temple Grandin Equine Center, including Concho, one of their programs. 🐴
Project CANTER is a nonprofit focused on enhancing wellbeing through the use of horses as a therapeutic tool. One of their offerings, Concho, is a 6–8 week program where participants engage with peers, staff, and volunteers while working hands-on with assigned horses.
Participants learn the ins and outs of horsemanship with experienced professionals at Colorado State University’s Temple Grandin Equine Center. No horse experience is necessary.
Each weekly session lasts approximately two hours and emphasizes:
Understanding horse communication
Learning basic horse care and management
Building self-awareness and emotional resilience
Who can participate:
Applicants must be currently working with an outpatient mental health clinician and be:
Between the ages of 12–23
A proficient English speaker
Experiencing stress, anxiety, suicidal ideation, or complicated grief (based on PHQ/GAD/Columbia/CAMS assessments)
Open to new experiences
Individuals in active crisis, those with a felony criminal record, or with a history of aggression, high trauma, animal abuse, or threats against others are not eligible for this program.
The 8-week flagship program is offered at no cost, with applications opening in mid-February. Please share with others who may benefit.
