MAKE COMMUNICATION YOUR SUPER POWER!

Improving your communication does not have to be as scary of a goal as it sounds. It can be your greatest strength. Here are 3 tips you can do today to have your super power be communication.

-When someone speaks, show genuine interest. Have a smile, nod your head and comment. People feel valued when truly heard.

-Ask deeper questions about the content. Helpful terms for deeper questions are “how”, “why” and “tell me”. For example, How did that decision come to you? Or, Why does that choice seem like the best? Or Tell me how you knew that… Words like this will prompt you listener to give a more detailed response and you can easily build follow-up questions for a nice conversation.

-Speak with engaging melody patterns. It’s called intonation. When you speak, apply vocal variety, inflection or modulation. The brain likes moving pitch tones and a speaking style like this adds authentic energy. A monotone pattern or mumbling behavior is tuned out quickly. Speech like that is hard to hear, process and enjoy. It is truly a habit that can hurt you in a professional setting.

With these tips, your communication interaction will leave a positive and memorable experience. So, when asked what is your super power, it really can be communication.

HOW TO MAKE BETTER CONNECTIONS WITH COLLEGUES AND NETWORKING EVENTS

Who here hates small talk? There is actually an approach to do it in a way that can create a deeper connection with people. Ask people how the feel about a topic rather than the facts of the situation. When questions are posed in that style, people typically share more information with greater details that allows for a more dynamic conversation to build.

For example,
Instead of, What department are you in? Try, What do love about your roll?
Try openers like, How did you feel when…. Or Did it make you happy to learn….
Instead of, Are you married, Try, Tell me about your family
Where did you grow up? Tell me about the best part about where or how you grew up?
Is that a hard job? Instead try, What challenges do you typically face?

When you ask feeling questions that are not too personal the conversation has more of an authentic emotional tone where people can relate, share back and then there is connection. Asking questions like this is less of an “interview” tone and feels like a genuine opener that can create a deeper and more meaningful conversation. Starters like, tell me, how or why are good ways to start a topic. People remember how you make them feel, and genuine and pleasant conversations builds rapport, trust and a positive memory. This is a good thing in the world of business, or for any type of a relationship.

Is it really possible to Reduce Your Accent?
Yes, but not eliminate it completely. Reducing an accent and having a more neutral style of speaking American English is a very realistic goal. The most common feature behind an accent is cultural background. Every cultural group has its own melody style and cadence for talking. Once someone learns a second language like English, it is spoken in the style and the rules of the first language because that is what talking is to the individual. As a result, English is spoken with an accent.

The first step to reducing an accent is to speak English in the American style (known as intonation) with American rules and not the rules from the first language. A great example is news and sports broadcasters. Check out how the melody moves up and then down. Speech is never monotone but always moving in different pitch patters with a lot of vocal variety. That is the American cultural speaking style for English and business communication. Everyone can learn this melody pattern. Give it a try!

Just wrapped up an amazing trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and couldn't resist sharing some linguistic adventures with y'all! 🌟 As a speech pathologist, and corporate communication specialist, delving into the unique Southern dialect was an absolute treat. From the lilting drawl to the colorful expressions, every conversation felt like a journey into the heart of Southern hospitality.

One of the things that stood out most was the delightful use of "y'all" and "bless your heart" – truly the essence of Southern warmth and friendliness! 😊 It's incredible how language reflects culture, and here in South Carolina, it's like every word carries a piece of its rich history.

On that note, it is easy to use terms like “y’all” across multiple speaking situations. It rolls off the tongue very easily. A term like this could easily turn into a filler word or what I call in a verbal virus. If you are from the South, I would like to caution the use of this in formal business settings as it may be too casual and could hurt your leadership image if used frequently. How speech and voice are used, correlates heavily with credibility and leadership abilities and vocabulary and phrases matter, especially if used often.

Expressions and phrases shine light into our personalities. In a corporate setting, try to have a balance of fun expressions and language that can enhance your credibility and leadership persona.
