Dr. Timothy Spence has always felt a pull toward service. His interest in the Air Force began in childhood and eventually led him to join, hoping to do whatever part he could to serve his country. From 2005–2008, he cared for children and families as a pediatrician in the U.S. Air Force.

For Dr. Spence, Veterans Day is a moment to appreciate the men and women who have served our nation, accomplished incredible things, and sacrificed so much. Today, he continues that spirit of service at Texas Children’s, providing care to the patients and families who rely on him every day.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Spence for his service, and to all the physicians and staff who have served our nation and continue to care for children and families. ā¤ļøšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

From patient to pediatrician šŸ‘§āž”ļøšŸ‘©ā€āš•ļøā€‹ā€‹

When Dr. Beverly Lee of Texas Children’s Pediatrics – Braeswood was growing up, she loved going to visit her pediatrician, Dr. Ian Kavin. So much so that it inspired her to get into pediatrics herself.

ā€‹ā€‹ā€œDr. Kavin treated my parents, my siblings and I with kindness and empathy and was always a great listener. My family had the upmost respect for him,ā€ said Dr. Lee.

After medical school, Dr. Lee became Dr. Kavin's colleague, working alongside one another at the same Texas Children’s Pediatrics practice. With Dr. Kavin now retired, Dr. Lee carries on his mission of extraordinary care.

ā€œThe thing that I am most proud of is on a day-to-day basis I strongly believe our whole team is committed to the care of each individual child,ā€ says Dr. Lee. ā€œI want every family to know that when they walk through our doors, from our front office to provider, their child is going to receive the best care possible.ā€

What goes up might come down ā›‘ļø

Newborns can roll unintentionally, even when placed on a changing table. So parents must be EXTRA vigilant when very small children are resting or playing on elevated surfaces, even at the doctor’s office.

If you find yourself getting distracted, consider moving your child somewhere else, holding them in your lap or placing them in an infant carrier instead. If using a carrier, make sure your child is strapped in and the carrier is placed on a flat and sturdy surface.

September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month. ā¤ļø Every baby deserves the best start in life, and newborn screening helps make that possible.

With a simple test in the first days after birth, doctors can detect rare but serious conditions early—often before symptoms appear. Early detection means timely care, better outcomes, and healthier futures.

At Texas Children’s, we’re committed to supporting families every step of the way, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.
