🚨 UPDATE: Co-Founder & CEO of Med2Market and Life Tree Anatomical charged in connection with Austin mortuary ā€˜experiments’

New details have emerged: Dr. Aaron Ashoka Ali, Co-Founder & CEO of MedtoMarket and Life Tree Anatomical, is now facing criminal charges linked to the alleged unauthorized ā€œexperimentsā€ on human remains at Capital Mortuary Services in Austin, TX.

Charges include:

- Abuse of a co**se without legal authority (State jail felony)

- Aggravated perjury (3rd-degree felony)

Why is he being charged with perjury?

Dr. Ali testified under oath before Texas lawmakers, the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, on April 16th, just days before his arrest, specifically about Senate Bill 2721, a new law meant to fix the very problems he’s now accused of exploiting.

šŸ¤” What is S.B. 2721 about?

This bill, going into effect September 1, 2025, creates stricter rules for how donated human bodies are tracked, used, and respected in Texas.

It:
- Requires a secure tracking system for all donated remains

- Limits who can receive bodies (licensed medical schools, not just private labs)

- Makes it illegal to mishandle donations

- Gives the Texas FuneralService Commission more power to inspect and revoke licenses

- Sets penalties for breaking the rules

Bottom line: This law is designed to protect donors, families, and public trust and prevent abuses like the ones now under investigation.

Families deserve transparency. We’ll keep monitoring this case, providing updates and services you can trust.

🚨 ā€œAustin Mortuary Owner Arrested for ā€œExperimentingā€ on Human Remainsā€

Here’s What Families Need to Know:

Two separate investigations by KVUE & KXAN News (April 2025) have revealed that an employee/owner of Capital Mortuary Services (and owner of Eternal Peace Funeral Home) has been arrested after allegedly conducting unauthorized ā€œexperimentsā€ on bodies in their care.

This individual is connected with a local medical‑training company (Med2Market) and a willed Cost-Free Whole Body Donation Organization, raising serious questions about oversight, consent, and respect for the deceased.

This directly violates both Texas Health & Safety Code § 711 and the most basic standard of human decency.

Why This Matters:

Funeral professionals must, by law and ethics, treat every deceased person with dignity and respect, and must get written next‑of‑kin consent for anything beyond normal care. Rogue behavior like this isn’t ā€œindustry normā€; it’s a breach of trust that fuels public fear and should not btolerated.

5 Red Flags You Should Never Ignore when dealing with a funeral home:

1ļøāƒ£ No General Price List on request. They stall, hide it, or say ā€œtalk to a director first.ā€
2ļøāƒ£ Sketchy paperwork. Vague language, blanks to ā€œfill in later,ā€ or pressure to sign fast.
3ļøāƒ£ Who has the body? Evasive answers about custody, location, or chain of care.
4ļøāƒ£ Secrecy around refrigeration, embalming, or transport. You have a right to know.
5ļøāƒ£ Your gut says something’s off. Listen to it. Walk out, document everything, and report it if necessary.

Our Commitment to You:

I’m personally monitoring this case closely and will keep sharing verified updates so families across Central Texas, and beyond, can stay informed and protected.

Reminder:

If you’re in Central Texas and ever feel uneasy about any funeral provider, contact me. I’ll happily guide you toward more transparent, ethical options, and show you exactly how to file a complaint if needed.

Because every life deserves respect, right up to the very end.

Life, Death & Everything In Between ✨

It’s been a while since I’ve shared here, but I’m back—with a heart full of gratitude and a camera roll full of moments that remind me why I do this work. šŸ’›

In the past few months, I’ve:
šŸ•Š Guided my end-of-life doula students through a living funeral, honoring the sacredness of home wakes and natural burials.

šŸ–¤ Celebrated a dear friend expanding quality funeral care in Central Texas.

šŸŽ¶ Talked death over music and handmade crafts—because these conversations belong in everyday life.

šŸ“œ Witnessed people write their bucket list dreams.

🦓 Shared how anatomical donations (like bone grafts for dental work) continue the cycle of care.

🐰 Raised baby bunnies on the homestead—because life and death are always intertwined.

šŸ‘µšŸ½ Delivered donated goods to elders, celebrated a 100th birthday (!!), and taught alongside speakers I deeply admire.

🌿 Held my grandmother close again through a beautiful tribute.

And soooo much more!

Death isn’t just an ending—it’s woven into our communities, our care, and even our celebrations. I’m honored to keep showing up for it all. ✨

If you’ve been here a while or you’re new, thank you for being part of this space. What’s been on your mind about life and death lately? Let’s talk about it. šŸ’›

NEWS ALERT: Green Burials for Veterans

The VA has taken a big step toward sustainability by offering green burial sections at select national cemeteries! These eco-friendly and dignified options honor both Veterans and the environment with biodegradable caskets, shrouds, and no embalming.

āœ… New Green Burial Sites:

Pikes Peak National Cemetery (CO)
National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona (AZ)
Florida National Cemetery (FL)

While green burial sections are new, the VA has always accepted remains prepared naturally and/or in biodegradable containers at all open cemeteries.

This initiative reinforces their commitment to honoring evolving burial preferences and preserving the planet. šŸ’š

šŸ•Æļø Celebrating DĆa de los Mu***os: Embracing Life, Honoring Death šŸ•Æļø

In Mexican culture, death isn’t something to fear—it’s a part of life’s natural cycle. Here are some unique ways we talk about dying:

šŸ’œEstirar la pata – ā€œTo stretch the legā€
Refers to the stiffening of the body after death.
šŸ’™Colgar los tenis – ā€œTo hang up the sneakersā€
Some places throw shoes on street cables to announce a community loss.
🧔Se Petateó– A ā€œpetate,ā€ is a woven mat for life’s moments: sleep, living, and dying. I actually have a real petate from Mexico; I’ll share more soon!
šŸ’šEntregar el equipo – ā€œReturn the equipmentā€
Just like an athlete after a game, the deceased has ā€œhanded backā€ their gear.
šŸ¤ŽSacar con los pies por delante – ā€œTaken out feet firstā€ How the departed leave their homes, a final goodbye.
šŸ’™Se enfrió – ā€œThey got coldā€
A simple way to refer to the end of life’s warmth.
šŸ¤Se lo llevó la huesuda – ā€œThe bony one took themā€ Death, known as La Huesuda, came for them.
šŸ’œSe nos adelantó – ā€œGot ahead of usā€
A respectful phrase honoring someone who moved on.
🩷Fue a ver cómo crecen las rosas desde abajo – ā€œWent to see how roses grow from belowā€ A way to say someone is buried.

Today I’ll be presenting at the Tree of Life Conference! I can’t wait to share how death doulas can preserve culture in Latino death care.

I hope you enjoyed these expressions on how we honor life’s balance in a meaningful, culturally-rooted way.

Ā”Feliz DĆa de los Mu***os! šŸ’€

For the past few years, I’ve poured my heart into creating community altars around the city—each one a tribute to those who’ve died before us, inviting everyone to join in honoring our loved ones.

It’s been a beautiful experience, but over time, it started to feel more like ā€œworkā€, pulling me away from my roots, purpose, and the deeper connection to my cultural traditions.

This year, I decided to keep it closer to my heart—simpler, more intimate, and authentic to my upbringing. Just my personal family and friends, and of course, my beloved pets.

When building an ofrenda, consider including:
šŸ’› Marigolds (CempasĆŗchil): Their bright color and scent guide spirits back home
🧔 Papel Picado: The delicate banners represent the wind and have holes allowing the spirits to travel through them
šŸ’™ Different Levels: Altars often have levels to symbolize the sky, earth, and the spirit world, creating a space where all realms meet
šŸ’œ Arches: Made of marigolds or branches symbolize the gateway between life and death
šŸ¤ Candles: Represent fire and symbolize love, lighting the way through the darkness
ā¤ļø Photos: A reminder of who we’re welcoming back
šŸ–¤ Calaveras: A nod to the playful side of death, reminding us that death is a part of life
šŸ¤Ž Pan de Mu**to: A traditional round sweet bread symbolizing the circle of life and death with seeds on top to represent the tears shed for the living
šŸ’š Favorite Foods & Treats: Because who wouldn’t want to return for their favorite snacks after a long journey?
šŸ’™ Water & Salt: To quench their thirst after a long travels and symbolizing purification

Remember, creating this space is about keeping their memory alive and remembering that love never fades, even when our loved ones—whether human or animal—are no longer physically with us. šŸ§”šŸ•Æļø

Today, October 27th we honor the return of our furry family members. 🐾✨

What is a death doula? A death doula is a professionally trained and compassionate guide who helps families navigate the emotional landscape of end-of-life matters, ensuring they have the information and options they need to make the right decisions. A doula provides a holistic approach, offering care and comfort, honoring the unique journey of each individual, bridging modern care and ancient traditions, and empowering us to live and die more consciously.

How else would you describe a death doula?

Enrollment for our 2nd Austin Cohort is now live. I’m proud to be teaching another group of doulas and helping prepare them to serve our community. This work is truly sacred. When you’re called, you just know. If this resonates with you, use the link in my bio to register. Seats are limited.

Looking forward to BUILDING BRIDGES 2024 hosted by the , , and

My focus will be on the importance of language and cultural respect and how it can transform our experiences with death, making it more personalized for all people and communities. By celebrating our differences and working together, we can bridge the gaps in deathcare and provide everyone with transparent information, compassionate support, and access to the right care for their unique needs. Let’s create a system that offers choice, affordability, and collaboration. That moves us forward in caring for our elders, dying, and dead with the utmost love and respect every human deserves.

In the journey of life, it’s the love and connections we make that truly matter. As an end-of-life consultant/planner/doula with over 12 years of experience my mission remains clear: to create meaningful, heartfelt experiences for individuals and families, guiding them with compassion and understanding. Simple way to add more details or information to your advance Directive to Physicians and Family or Surrogates (aka Living Will).

*For my Texas folks šŸ‘†šŸ½that is the legal name of the directive provided by the state.
To find this form, go to my bio link, select the Funeral Consumer Alliance of Central Texas link, select the directives tab and you’ll be sure to get more than you bargained for!

Now this form is fairly general and I will not be going over it extensively, rather I want to focus your attention to page 2. On the Texas form you will see a section that states ā€œAdditional Requestsā€ followed by 3 small lines.

HERE is where you can notate ā€œSee supplemental directive attached to this documentā€ and then you can confidently attach any supplemental information detailing further instructions or addressing any what ifs.

These forms don’t always give us enough space to truly express ALL of our wishes or give guidance in what do in the various possibilities that may happen. But you have the right to add more details! Simply including this will tie any further instructions to the legal document provided by the state.

Still need help understanding your options?
Drop your questions in the comments, send me a DM or schedule a free consultation.

Make sure to save this for reference! šŸ“„
Like if you’re in your advance directive era! ✨
Share this with your accountability buddy and y’all work together to get these important documents completed! šŸ‘Æā€ā™€ļø

Our Story

Pale Hearse was founded by two women of color with over 10 years combined experience in the Funeral Industry, a licensed funeral director and an experienced mortuary specialist. Pale Hearse was created to become the leading resource for affordable and Eco-conscious funeral options, with a streamlined focus on free and engaging education. It is our heartfelt belief that a well informed public creates stronger communities for those that find themselves dealing with tragedy.

Co-Founders Alex Casas and Allie Garcia met while working in the same funeral home and while they loved their work, they could see the cracks in the system that was commonly regarded as a ā€œGood Ol’ Boys Club.ā€ Ever inspired by the families they served, they decided to create Pale Hearse as a way to ensure loved ones left behind were getting the care they needed. Deathcare is life-care and Pale Hearse pledges to assist families during all aspects of their lives, from pre-planning before a death occurs, to the difficult time during a loss, and by supporting those in need during the trying years to come.

For decades, the funeral industry has thrived on public ignorance and has used this to take advantage of people dealing with traumatic and difficult decisions. Pale Hearse believes that by creating open networks of communication across a wide array of providers we can bring funerals into the 21st century. Adhering to modern values, we offer affordability and the newest in innovative, Eco-conscious options. We believe that affordability will lead families to find services better suited to their needs and will therefore be able to spend money on the options they desire and deserve.

Confronting an antiquated industry is no small feat, but we continue to undertake this challenge by supporting and collaborating with innovators working to change the way we live and die consciously so we can all finally rest in peace.
