Happy Halloween from half Helen! Here are a few eye-safety tips to keep your night frightfully fun:

Avoid costume contact lenses unless prescribed by an eye doctor. Over-the-counter lenses can cause serious infections or eye damage.

Use makeup safely! Choose hypoallergenic, non-toxic face paints, and make sure to remove all makeup before bed to prevent irritation.

Stay visible at night, reflective tape on costumes or glow sticks can help trick-or-treaters be seen by drivers.

We’re expanding our scope of care! Over the past year, half Helen has continued to grow and evolve to ensure our community receives the highest level of eye care possible. We’re thrilled to share that, thanks to a new partnership with Central Health, our doctors can now provide an even broader range of services including glaucoma management, macular degeneration care, and other specialized treatments. With these expanded services now available at our clinic, it’s easier than ever for individuals and families to receive the care they need.

At half Helen, we believe everyone deserves clear vision and compassionate care. This partnership marks an exciting step forward in our mission to help people see the world clearly.

Welcome to the Team!

We’re excited to officially welcome Barb Klepfer to the half Helen staff! Many of you may already know Barb as one of our most dedicated volunteers—so dedicated, in fact, that she was named 2024 Volunteer of the Year.

Now, Barb joins us as our Pediatric Program Coordinator, where she’ll work directly with schools to plan and manage our Vision Field Trip Program as well as the Student Vision Voucher Program. With her extensive background in healthcare systems, she’s already helping us streamline operations and expand our reach. We’re thrilled to have her on board and can’t wait to see the incredible impact she’ll make in this new role.

“In my 35 years of living in Austin and working in healthcare, I’ve had the privilege of working with a not-for-profit organization that provided care to vulnerable individuals, including those who may not be able to afford healthcare services. That mission has deeply shaped my own values, and I strongly believe in it.
