Fistulography in dentistry is a diagnostic procedure used to accurately identify the origin of an intraoral fistula, especially in cases where the responsible tooth or structure is not clinically apparent.
In this procedure, a radiopaque material—usually a thin gutta-percha—is carefully inserted into the fistula canal until it reaches the source of infection, which is usually associated with the tip of the affected root.
A periapical radiograph or digital imaging is then taken to follow the course of the canal and precisely locate the lesion.
This procedure is of great value in differentiating the origin of the fistula; whether the source is endodontic, periodontal, or related to root fractures.
By doing so, it allows dentists to plan precise and targeted treatment, while avoiding unnecessary interventions on healthy teeth.
Fistulography is a simple, minimally invasive, and clinically important procedure that confirms the diagnosis and guides effective management of infection.
