THE HEALTH and Trade departments on Tuesday reiterated their warning against selling medicines and other pharmaceutical supplies online, which is prohibited unless the trader has a physical store and corresponding permits.

Anna Melissa S. Guerrero, division chief of the Health department-s Pharmaceutical Division, said these requirements ensure the presence of licensed pharmacists who could advise patients before dispensing the medication.

In three new Health Affairs papers supported by the Commonwealth Fund and The Drug Pricing Lab of Memorial Sloan Kettering, policy experts explore ways to get pharmaceutical prices under control. By increasing competition in drug markets, applying value-based purchasing, and protecting patients from high out-of-pocket costs, they believe policymakers can begin to make affordable prescription drugs a reality.

Apart from prevention measures like wearing masks and keeping oneself sanitized, drugs and medicines play an important role in controlling the spread of COVID-19 infection. Vaccination is another effective way against the spread of the infection but its availability is limited. "Vaccination is having a substantial impact on case numbers and hospitalizations in a number of high-income countries, but limitations in global access to vaccines mean that many populations remain vulnerable," the World Health Organisation (WHO) says. " Even in vaccinated individuals, uncertainties remain about the duration of protection and efficacy of current vaccines and the efficacy of existing treatments for COVID-19 against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants," it adds.
