1. Family history
If your parent, grandparent, sister or brother has had a stroke β especially before reaching age 65
2. Age
The risk increases with age, the incidence doubling with each decade after the age of 45 years and over 70% of all strokes occur above the age of 65.
3. Hypertension, Diabetes and High Cholesterol
High blood pressure is the most important modifiable risk factor for stroke. Diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity also increase the risk of stroke by contributing to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can lead to a stroke.
4. Physical Inactivity
Lack of physical activity is a major risk factor for stroke. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes, all of which increase the risk of stroke.
5. Smoking
Smoking is another significant risk factor for stroke, as it damages the blood vessels and increases the risk of blood clots.
6. Excessive alcohol consumption
Heavy alcohol consumption can increase the risk of stroke. It raises blood pressure, damages blood vessels, and increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, all of which increase the risk of stroke.
