When I first encountered yoga, I wasn’t a fan. I thought it was “weird.” It was 1995, and I was a student in the dance department at The University of Texas at Austin. We did yoga on Wednesdays. My dance professor sensed my skepticism and challenged me in pedagogy class to observe and learn to teach Yoga for Seniors. It was the start of a whole new journey for me. I was amazed at how alive and vibrant these women were. They were tuned in to life at a deeper level than I had seen before. From then on, yoga was part of my regular training routine, and it stayed with me as I moved to New York City to dance professionally. It’s there that I also fell in love and got married. When I was 27, my father became critically ill.The three weeks he spent in the hospital tested every ounce of my faith and joy. I learned when to fight, and when to let go. I learned to stop praying for what I wanted and began leaning into whatever was. I found within me a strength I didn’t know I had, even as my beloved mentor and spiritual guide was dying. It was so delightful to see so many beautiful faces in the Zoom Room this morning as we gathered virtually and on our mats to return to our hearts amid news cycles of fear and violence. Please bring your personal needs and intentions to this chakra one, two, and heart-focused class. A beautiful blessing from Jan Richardson's new book, How the Stars Get In Your Bones: A Book of Blessings, serves as our inspiration for always returning to Love.

I had a dream the other night that was just like so many I’ve had before, with one important distinction: I made it upstairs.

I frequently dream about my house (well, it’s not my real house—it’s the one I often have in dreams) and the many rooms in it. I usually have access to the ground floor and I’ve been to the basement, but there is a second and third floor I can kind of see but can’t access. What I see is dark and empty—just wood beams and cobwebs. So when I finally made it up there recently and saw what was now inside, it was as exciting as if it were real.

The rooms upstairs were filled with light! They had curtains, couches, and beds, and I could tell people had been there. There was even a darling kitchen with a very inviting table and chairs. I remember thinking, “This is a full apartment up here where someone could live!” So of course I had to look into what this could mean.

If you’ve ever worked with dreams and their meanings, you might be familiar with the symbolism of rooms and houses. In fact, for many years I worked with a yoga therapy mentor who was also a Jungian psychologist. When I brought these room dreams to her years ago, she shared with me that dreams of houses and their rooms can often represent the self—your psyche, inner life, or soul. I’ll have to do a bit of journaling around what my dream means to me, but I will say it is exciting to know these hidden rooms within me are now full of life and offering a safe place to sit, sip some tea, read a book, or take a nap.

Funny enough, when I shared this dream with the Zoom room students of Online Yoga Membership, I learned many of us have these dreams. So many hidden rooms and dream houses to explore!

These dreams remind me of a life-changing book I read a couple years ago: The Interior Castle, by Teresa of Ávila. In it, she describes the soul as a vast, luminous castle with many rooms, where the spiritual life is a gradual movement inward—from distraction and fear toward intimacy, clarity, and union with the Divine. Each room represents a deepening level of awareness, humility, and love rather than spiritual achievement. It’s truly a beautiful book, and I highly recommend it.

Things like dreams, rooms, symbols, and archetypes always fascinate me in how universal they are. It’s like they have imprints in our DNA, and we are all united by them to one degree or another. I think it’s part of what draws me to labyrinth work. Labyrinths themselves are an archetype of the journey of life. Just like St. Teresa’s rooms that move inward towards unity, a labyrinth walk slowly winds your way to the center. And as you walk inward, there can be a releasing of mind chatter, allowing you to arrive at that inner “room” ready to listen and receive.

In many ways, walking a labyrinth is like yoga asana. You calm the body with movement and breath, then the mind will follow. Once the mind has settled you have access to the deeper parts of yourself–your inner room.

✨ If you’d like to experience this in person, I’m hosting a Community Labyrinth Walk on Sunday, February 1, at Butler Park (near Auditorium Shores) in downtown Austin, from 2–4 pm. It will be a celebration of sorts–stay tuned to learn why… I’ll send a registration link soon, but mark your calendar if you’d like to join!

So, do you also dream of rooms in your house? Are you curious about what’s hidden inside your interior castle? I hope you take some time to ponder this a bit. What is within you that is ready to be seen and known? What inner rooms are ready and waiting for your arrival?

May you walk with deep trust into your mysterious inner room, and may you discover a room full of light and love ready for you to enjoy.

🕊️ A Gentle Start to the New Year

"Practicing presence is simple and profound. When you catch yourself in your head, spinning out with your thoughts, or worried about the future regarding things you can’t control, pause and notice your breath. Take two or three deep, slow breaths as you look around the room, noticing objects and details. Wiggle your toes and remember you are an embodied soul. Feel the safety of the earth beneath you, and anchor yourself from your tailbone. Bring to mind a few things you are grateful for, and that’s it. Let your lips smile a little and your eyes soften. Right now, you are safe. You’re ok. And that’s all you need to be right now."

If you're a ritual geek like I am, you'll love a labyrinth walk to enter a new season. November 30 is the first Sunday of Advent, and the last day of the month before we head into so many of our cultural and religious holidays and celebrations. This is a way to enter thoughtfully, open-hearted, and with intention.

Labyrinth walking is a moving meditation that calms the mind, downshifts the nervous system, and fosters clarity. It is a singular path towards the center, and itself is an archetype of life's journey. And when done in community, the impact is multiplied.

If you've never walked a labyrinth before, this is the perfect chance. If you're a seasoned walker, please join us and lift our vibration.
All you have to do is RSVP on the Google form and I'll save you a spot!

Details:
Sunday, November 30, 4pm, Greenbriar Park, South Austin

I celebrated my birthday last month with my yearly tradition: a labyrinth walk. This time, I turned it into a practice of deep trust… and the labyrinth had some surprising wisdom for me.
If you’ve ever felt “off the path” or unsure where you’re headed, this one’s for you.

Me too. But lately, I’ve realized that healing doesn’t come from what’s in the toolbox—it comes from what we actually practice.

As I sit in the front room of my house, on my big comfy red chair, with my precious red heeler, Lila, sleeping on her ottoman and ignoring the view of her outside domain, I am so touched. The evening sun is lighting up the bushes and trees outside in such a lovely autumnal glow. I have some instrumental guitar music playing on Spotify, supporting my creative endeavor of writing something that matters. Or at least doesn’t suck.

I’m basking in a moment like this, because it feels hard earned. I’ve been driven and goal-oriented since my youth, and contentment does not come naturally.

I first learned about contentment, or santosha in Sanskrit, in yoga teacher training back in New York City, 2004, which was probably the most competitive era of my life. Just hearing about santosha, which is one of the inner practices of yoga (niyama), sparked my whole mind and spirit with curiosity.
