Thank you to everyone who came to hear Ashley Solano speak on brain death and organ donation!
One important takeaway from the night was that definitions of brain death can vary by state, and depending on where you are, that can affect whether life-sustaining support is continued or withdrawn. The term “brain death” was first introduced in 1968, and it is not always understood to be the same as biological death.
These differences can raise serious ethical questions surrounding the removal of life-sustaining treatment when a person may still have some bodily function and be alive, even if they do not have full neurological capacity.
