Teaching Tuesday ~ Malas: Malas are special strings of beads used for meditation and healing. Some are larger (108 beads) and some are smaller (54 beads). They can be made of wood, precious stones, or crystals. No matter the size or material, malas are powerful tools infused with wisdom and metaphysical properties that have been used for centuries and are still helping people in modern times. With Sanctuary Yoga being closed for a week, and now with damage, we would appreciate if you could support our non-profit studio.
❄️
We were able to make it to the property today after the snow and ice finally let up here in Austin, Texas. The front house, which houses Amala Foundation was in great shape.
❄️
Unfortunately, we had a water pipe bust in the back house, where Sanctuary Yoga studio is located. Within minutes, we had angels show up and help us turn off the water, assess the damage and make sure everything got cleaned up and secured before the freeze tonight.
❄️
What a community of people we have in Austin, Texas! We appreciate beyond words how many reached out to help. We’ve got a plumber and hvac angel coming help tomorrow. We are so grateful!
❄️
We have cancelled our outdoor classes for now but still have our zoom classes going. We’d love it if you supported us at this time by attended a zoom class, buying a class pass for indoor classes (coming soon), outdoor (when the ground dries) or just buying classes for gifts. Thank you all so much. Link in bio.
❄️
Stay safe, warm and keep taking care of eachother, Texas!

Edited: postponed till Sunday the 28th!

Join Cynthia Bernard, founder of ATX Yoga Girl for a Sunday Sound Bath Meditation. During your sound journey, you will hear Tibetan bowls, quartz bowls, and bells to guide you, the listener. These practices highlight themes of how the experience of sound manifests not only through hearing but through tactile physical vibrations and frequencies. The bowls are tuned into 432 Hz (love & clarity).

Sound can help release stress, deepen relaxation, can help deepen mind, body, & spirit connection, helps restore energy when you are mentally & physically fatigued, can help you feel a sense of mental clarity and calmness in the body, along with better sleep.

We start by setting the space and creating gentle movements with our body to release stuck energy thus being able to receive even more from the vibrations. Then, an invitation to rest and receive.

Teaching Tuesday: We might have gotten snow outside, but that doesn't mean we've got to be cold 🙂 Here are 4 yoga poses/practices to build HEAT!

#1. Kapalabathi (breath of fire) ~ This is a form of pranayama that stimulates your internal organs and generates heat through a rapid form of breathing. It boosts your metabolism releasing energy throughout your body.

#2. Sirsasana (headstand) ~ Known to some as the king of all poses, this asana is well-documented to calm your entire body, as the inverted position helps boost the blood flow to your hypothalamus and pineal glands in your brain.

#3. Kumbhakasana (Plank pose) ~ All you need is your own bodyweight and enough space to get down on all your fours at full stretch for an ideal plank workout. Hold this pose for a minute or more to start feeling the heat permeate throughout your body.

#4. Navasana (boat pose) ~ While this asana strengthens your abdominal area and hip flexors, it’s the maintaining of balance that really stimulates the body. In stimulating it, it generates heat quickly across your body. It also ends up reducing tension and deeply relaxes you.
There are many other poses that stimulate heat ~ What are some of your favorites?

Our Story

Sanctuary Yoga is Austin’s first and only donation-based, non-profit, yoga studio. At Sanctuary, we know that we thrive as individuals when we have opportunities to develop self-awareness, a sense of belonging, and connection to others. Our goal is to make these opportunities possible for everyone in our community.

Sanctuary Yoga was created by the Amala Foundation. At Amala, we hope to work for a more equitable, inclusive, compassionate future for us all. To reach that end, we are building a community of emotionally intelligent and socially conscious leaders by inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with themselves and others, grow as individuals, and serve conscious leaders in their communities. As a donation-based, nonprofit yoga studio, Sanctuary will be able to better support our community through yoga classes, workshops, and potluck events.
