In honor of Native American Heritage Month, our Native Youth Coalition welcomed Leo Gunner Baker, his family, and The Dakota Boys for an inspiring afternoon of song, dance, and prayer. They shared the rich traditions and stories behind their culture, inviting youth and staff to join in and experience these practices firsthand. This morning, two of our clinical supervisors, Amanda Hanson and Priscilla Diggins, are having the pleasure of connecting with 9th–12th grade students from across southeastern Minnesota at Career Quest 2025, hosted by Austin Aspires and Riverland Community College.

Amanda and Priscilla are leading an interactive activity that gives students a glimpse into the world of therapy—what it’s like to support others through mental health challenges and the skills it takes to be a therapist.

The conversations have been thoughtful, engaging, and inspiring. We hope some of these bright young minds will leave feeling excited about the possibility of a future in the mental health field!

Thank you to Austin Aspires and Riverland for inviting us to participate and giving us this chance to connect with our community.

Amanda’s leadership on the Villa unit is nothing short of inspiring. She’s a consistent and compassionate presence, always putting the needs of both youth and staff first. Changing Lives

Nexus-Gerard Family Healing is located on a beautiful 12-acre campus in Austin, MN, that once served as the Hormel Estate. The site has retained many of its homelike charms, including the family living room, cozy bedrooms, entry drive, gardens, and trees. A nature preserve is adjacent to the property, and wild turkeys and deer are often seen roaming the grounds.

Nexus-Gerard provides an array of individualized mental health services for boys, girls, teens, adults, and families. Nexus-Gerard’s history began in the 1960s, when it was founded as the Gerard School, a treatment site for the care of children. Throughout the years, it has been known as Gerard of Minnesota, Gerard Treatment Programs, Gerard Academy, and, today, Nexus-Gerard Family Healing — but it has always retained its focus of caring for children and families.

Nexus-Gerard has demonstrated excellence in its treatment approach and was awarded Provider of the Year by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in 2012. In 2015, Nexus-Gerard opened an outpatient program to serve children, teens, adults, and families in the community in answer to County and School needs for mental health services in the area.
