It’s Black History Month and we have some Dermatology history for you!

Theodore Kenneth Lawless, MD, MS, DSc, LLD (1892-1971) was a renowned Black doctor, businessman, and philanthropist. Dr. Lawless’s dedication to research and patient care set new standards in medical practice.

Originally from New Orleans, Lawless left to study medicine at the University of Kansas and Northwestern University. He went on to study dermatology at prestigious institutions in Boston, New York, Paris, and Vienna. In 1924, he opened his dermatology practice on Chicago's South Side in a poor, Black neighborhood.

He also became the first African American to hold a faculty position at Northwestern University. In that time, he helped establish Northwestern's first medical laboratories, including their first clinical laboratory for dermatology, which became a hub for studying skin conditions that disproportionately affected the Black community. His work provided the scientific basis for understanding how different pathologies present on darker skin, allowing for the development of nuanced treatment protocols.

Lawless pioneered treatments that advanced the field of dermatology. His research focused on finding a cure for leprosy and advancing treatments for syphilis, and other skin conditions. He taught dermatology at Northwestern until 1940 when he left the university to focus on his practice.
