🔤 ABA Spotlight: The ABCs of Behavior!
Understanding behavior starts with three key components: A-B-C. This simple framework helps us figure out why a behavior happens and how to support positive change.
A = Antecedent
What happens before the behavior.
It can be a request, an event, or something in the environment.
➡️ Example: You ask your child to clean up toys.
B = Behavior
The action your child does.
➡️ Example: Your child yells or throws toys.
C = Consequence
What happens after the behavior.
This influences whether the behavior will happen again.
➡️ Example: You give them more time before cleaning up.
Why the ABCs Matter:
•Helps identify triggers and patterns
•Shows what your child may be communicating
•Guides us in teaching new, more helpful skills
•Creates consistency between parents, teachers, and therapists
Parent Tip:
Start by noticing one behavior and jotting down what happened before and after. You’ll be surprised how quickly patterns appear!
Understanding the ABCs gives you the tools to respond calmly, confidently, and effectively. 💛
