The longer a woman's lifetime duration of breastfeeds, the more she reduces her risk for ovarian cancer. How does this work? Thatโ€™s the focus of this 2024 systematic review:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11060284/pdf/ms9-86-2805.pdf

A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.ย  This has never been so true as in the ongoing debate about foremilk and hindmilk and their impact on breastfeeding.ย  The misunderstandings around these concepts have caused anxiety, upset, and even led to breastfeeding problems and prem

You grew a human from scratch.
You birthed them with strength.
You nourished them with love.
Your body is incredible.
Donโ€™t let anyone take that away from you.

OK: science post!

It can be hard to explain this simply, but basically there is an ingredient in breastmilk called FIL. (Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation. Inhibitor means it inhibits, stops or discourages lactation)

As the breast fills up with milk, FIL gets bossy AF and tells the milk production to slow down.
So the fuller your b**b, the SLOWER milk is being made.

ALSO, fat kind of clings to your milk ducts, so when your breast feels as flat as a pancake after 2 hours of cluster feeding and your baby is pulling on and off like they haven't eaten for weeks they are actually pulling out that really high fat milk. So it is fine and beneficial even if they aren't getting really high volumes of it.

THEN because the breast is really soft and FIL isn't really hanging around at this point, the breast speeds up production so you have lots more milk later.

Clever isn't it?

One of my favorite breastfeeding facts that I love to share from time to time! Mothers have a biological drive to kiss their babies as a way to protect their new immune system.๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฆ

When you kiss๐Ÿ’‹your baby, you are sampling the pathogens on her skin, which are then transferred to your lymphatic system, where you will produce antibodies to those pathogens. Those antibodies will pass through your breast milk to your baby and boost her immune system.

Human Milk is Medicine. This is why breastfeeding through illness is important.
Hereโ€™s how to pull it off.

โœจโœจโœจ Nala and I are both sick with a temperature, chills and fever. Iโ€™m warm, achy and N wants to cuddle & feed.โœจโœจโœจ

Hereโ€™s what we know:

โœจThe act of breastfeeding suppresses the gag reflex.
โœจOur breasts will warm up or cool down depending on the need of our child
โœจHuman milk is easily digestible so even when baby does vomit or spit up we know theyโ€™re getting all the water and nourishment they need
โœจ Our bodies will continue to produce antibodies for 6-10 months after an Illness.
โœจStudies tell us that while breastfeeding children still get sick they get less serious symptoms and recover faster.

โœจโœจโœจItโ€™s important to remember that we can continue to nurse our babies through most illnesses and when we are told by a healthcare professional that we โ€œneedโ€ to wean or stop nursing itโ€™s ALWAYS important to talk to your local โœจโœจโœจ

So how do i continue to nurse my sick 5 year old while dealing with my own symptoms? I get help from my partner, who brings me food and drinks in bed, the whole family is in our big bed, watching tv and eating snacks (slow things down to a stop ๐Ÿ›‘ when you can). Iโ€™m treating Nala and myself as one person, when I drink water, she drinks water. When I have soup, I feed her from my bowl.

Last Saturday we shared our Ice Machine analogy for supply and demand. This weeks analogy is when you let your breasts not be emptied as often you create a traffic jam inside as things back up which leads to engorgement/clogs and eventually mastitis.

To divert this traffic we need to let some of these cars out aka breastmilk. Shorten the gaps you go between nursing and pumping to every 2-3 hours if you are struggling with traffic jams.

Our breast milk supply is like an ice machine.

When we ask for more ice, our ice machine makes us more ice. Same goes for our breast milk supply. If we nurse/pump and ask for more milk our bodies make more.

When we don't ask for more ice, our ice machine shuts off to avoid overflowing the machine which could lead to lots of problems... Ice bath slip and slide anyone.. lol! Same goes for our breast milk supply. If we go longer stretches between requesting or don't ask for milk through nursing or pumping, our body slows down production to prevent problems such as clogged ducts, mastitis, engorgement to name a few.
