My grandmother passed in this same hospital in 2012. It was this precise waiting area where I remember applying for counseling master's programs while she was in hospice. Her passing was quick but traumatic nonetheless. It is always hard even driving by this exact hospital campus due to how embedded my grandmother's experience with cancer continues to live in my memory.

Just by coincidence, my father indeed wound up here in the same hospital (and floor) in 2026 to treat two different forms of cancer. Though his is treatable, cancer is never easy. It is also a full circle moment that I am here in my final year as a doctoral student finalizing my dissertation in this same waiting area where I remember applying for master's in counseling programs 14 years ago.

Dad is in recovery and is about to be wheeled to his room.

I believe in closure. I believe in karma. I believe that the universe makes us return to places where we have unfinished business.

I think my grandmother is watching over my father and I, making sure he beats cancer and I beat this dissertation defense. LET'S. FCKING. GO.

This weekend, I had two very big COOL events and could not attend either one due to my dissertation proposal's revisions being due very soon. (And how much I've fallen behind).

If you're going back for your PhD. It is worth it, AND... It won't be easy! It will make you de-prioritize things that aren't prioritizing you. It will also ask you to "sell your soul". Don't agree. Have a balance with it all. With life, with family, with partners, with professors, with academic and personal commitments, with therapy clients, with yourself.
