I love observing animals, which is one reason why I studied anthropology. I've long known that many of my favorite animals are vegetarian.

QOTD: Who are your favorite animals?

Veganuary was created to support a world without animal farms and slaughterhouses. A world where food production does not decimate forests, pollute rivers and oceans, exacerbate climate change, and drive wild animal populations to extinction. I applaud that which is why my award-winning book mentions Veganuary and plant-based diets.

We are all God's children. Thou Shall Not Kill. Agree?

"If we humans, us, were killed and eaten by animals being eaten and killed by us, humans, at the same rate we humans, us, kill and eat animals, we humans, us, would be extinct in about 3 days." -- Matthew Modine, actor and filmmaker

The US meat and dairy industry has long been lobbying and spending billions to encourage (over)consumption of their products. Now, the US food pyramid was flipped to favor meat and dairy. This was because of the meat and dairy businesses rather than medical or scientific facts. Sadly, our current head of health has zero medical or research background and no respect for doctors or researchers.

In my book, I cite researchers and medical professionals. Learn more: deborahcharnes.com/book (Amazon US is selling the paperback at a great discounted price now).

My degree is in anthropology and I learned that our closest animal cousins are all plant-based, and that our bodies are not made for meat eating. It's our culture--especially in many modern-day Western countries, that tells us to focus on meat.

That's why I support Veganuary which is focused on changing consumer behaviors and attitudes, while providing information and practical support to try veganism.
One of the chapters in my award-winning book talks about mindful consumption and plant-based diets. Learn more: deborahcharnes.com/book.

I stopped eating meat more than 50 years ago, and went vegan 15 years ago. My bloodwork has always been perfect, and I only recently started taking vitamins (cuz I'm a senior citizen-lol).

One of the chapters in my award-winning book talks about mindful consumption, and I created The Yogi Diet 90-minute therapeutic workshop, available online. Learn more: deborahcharnes.com.

Our Story

Man is not made to be hunched over a digital device. Our bodies and minds shout back. We yearn for fresh air. To be surrounded by nature, rather than concrete. Likewise, our bodies need movement, AND quiet, and our minds need to quiet down before we rev up our creative juices.

Meditation and deep breathing, (pranayama) and getting away from sound/air pollution have proven physical and emotional benefits. Additionally, yoga therapy can be highly beneficial for people with arthritis, scoliosis, sciatica, osteoporosis, and a wide range of other physical and emotional health concerns. Deborah Charnes, of The Namaste Counsel, (C-IAYT, E-RYT 200, CYT 500 and YACEP, Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider) is a bilingual certified yoga therapist who teaches and counsels clients in Texas, Mexico and Central America using a holistic approach. Art and music. Dance. Yoga Nidra, Restorative Yoga, Yin Therapy, Diet and Lifestyle, Acupressure and Reiki. She offers private lessons and semi-private workshops on location (in Texas, Mexico and Central America). She works with people of all ages, with all physical/health needs, in English, or Spanish. Among her specialties are workshops for blood sugar management, weight management, and GI disorders. Read more at www.TheNamasteCounsel.com

Additionally, she welcomes day or overnight guests at The Namaste Getaway, a mini-retreat center. The Wimberley, Texas Getaway is perfect for writers, musicians, yogis and artists that need to disconnect from the city lights and ground themselves in nature, and the sights of deer in the background, and a sky filled with bright stars.

The Namaste Getaway offers customizable getaway plans for up to seven days.
