If you have NASH, you have inflammation and liver cell damage, along with fat in your liver. Usually, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) cause few or no symptoms. Certain health conditions—including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes—make you more likely to develop NAFLD and NASH.

According to recent literature, "non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is growing to become the most common chronic liver condition in Western populations in relation to the obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemics. The prevalence of NASH is also expected to increase by 63% between 2015 and 2030. In the United States alone, NASH is expected to become the leading cause of liver transplantation by 2020." (C. Estes, 2018)
