Interested in Breast Reduction? Here are answers to some common questions and that can help:

One of the most common questions asked during a breast reduction consultation is: Will my breast reduction surgery be covered by health insurance? The answer depends on the policy you have, but the surgery is generally considered a cosmetic procedure by insurance companies unless the patient can show an adequate number of related health issues. Some of the of the factors they consider include:

Painful shoulder strap indentations and shoulder grooving
Chronic back pain
Pain between the shoulder blades
Neck pain
Headaches extending from the back of the neck to the forehead region
Inability to work or exercise due to large breasts
Rashes or chronic infections beneath or between the breasts
Chronic breast pain due to large breast size
The threshold for coverage is different for every insurance company reviewer. Some insurance companies view breast reduction surgery as a cosmetic procedure and exclude breast reduction surgery from their policies, while other companies only require the doctor to deem the surgery ā€œmedically necessary.ā€ However, most require a letter from the plastic surgeon documenting the above symptoms. The insurance company may have criteria suggesting that a certain amount of breast tissue be removed, taking into account the patient’s height and weight (body mass index or BMI). They may also look for documents indicating that conservative measures have been unsuccessful in treating large breast related issues. These documents may include treatment by a referring physician (primary care physician, gynecologist or back surgeon), physical therapist, chiropractor, and/or massage therapist.

After your initial consultation, a letter is typically submitted to the insurance company within 48 hours. Most insurance companies take 3-4 weeks to reply to the request. Keep yourself updated on policies during this process, as an insurance company’s criteria might change over time. Candidates for breast reduction surgery who are interested in requesting health insurance coverage should contact their health insurance carrier and have them forward their criteria for coverage.

Breast reduction surgery typically has a very positive and transformative impact on patients’ lives and is very gratifying to me as a plastic surgeon.

Introducing the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Austin team!

We are told by so many patients how much they appreciate our office staff. I’m always honored to hear this because it shows that all the detail and effort we put into making the office run smoothly is paying off. I regularly convey to the staff how important it is for a surgeon to be organized, efficient, empathetic and punctual in the office as well as the operating room. Consequently, I’m proud to say that our office staff exhibits this work ethic, communicates well with each other, and reflects the values that I feel are essential in caring for our patients.

Jill has worked for me since 1997. She meets with each patient during their initial consultation and is responsible for financial quotes and surgery scheduling. Jill's role as Financial and Surgery Coordinator is to make sure that every patient feels comfortable and informed about the financial aspects or their surgery. Her excellent organizational skills and attention to detail ensures that the entire process is smooth from beginning to end.

Misti joined my practice in 2000. She has worked in a variety of positions at the office including medical assistant, front office coordinator, and patient coordinator. Misti enjoys working with patients to ensure that they feel completely at ease. She often shares her own experience to help guide patients through the surgery process.

Courtney is the friendly voice on the phone that welcomes our patients to the office. She organizes the clinic and assists in scheduling consultations and appointments. When not working, Courtney enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband, two kids, and Goldendoodle.

Erika is my Medical Assistant and has been working with me since 2008. She has been in the medical field since 1997 and is a native Austinite. Erika meets with each patient during the consultation and is responsible for patient education, scheduling surgeries and assisting with follow-up care. When she isn’t working, Erika enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and their English Bulldog. She also enjoys sewing and working in her butterfly garden.

Crystal is a Medical Assistant that has been working at the Plastic Surgery Center of Austin since 2008. She also assists in patient education scheduling surgeries and assisting with follow-up care. Crystal works together with Erika to make a great patient care team!

A big thanks to the Austin community for supporting our work and wonderful team! Feel free to learn more about our work at Cosmeticsurgeryatx.com or call (512) 338-4404 to speak to our wonderful staff about how we can help you.

What being Board Certified and Re-Certified means to me:

It’s surprising how few people ask me whether or not I am Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Plastic surgery is a specialty where various physicians advertise but the public typically isn’t aware there is rigorous training required to be certified as a Plastic Surgeon. For me it took the following before I was even eligible for board certification:

Four years of College
Four years of Medical School
One year Multi-specialty Internship
Five years of General Surgery Residency
Three years of Plastic Surgery Fellowship

Board Certification was a primary goal of mine from the time I entered my Plastic Surgery residency. Thirteen years after I graduated from college I began my practice and sat for my Plastic Surgery Boards through the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Since then I’ve been re-certified every 10 years, not only keeping up with current literature but going through a comprehensive review of all aspects of the field, passing written exams , presenting examples of patient cases to the Board and confirming my good standing at the various hospitals where I have privileges.

These years of training might sound exorbitant, but the training I received contributed to my fundamental knowledge base and added a level of experience that prepared me for my career. I trained at numerous hospitals around the country, some with more prestigious names than others, but the ones that gave me the most genuine experience were the inner city hospitals that were always short on staff and gave residents unique opportunities to have hands on experience. Places like LA County Hospital, New York St. Vincent’s Hospital, Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia, Cook County in Chicago, Loyola University and Children’s Hospital in Chicago where I learned everything from microsurgery of the hand, how to repair complex congenital facial deformities, facial fractures, reconstructive surgery and various cosmetic procedures.

Though there are always physicians who claim they can treat your desired needs, only a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon can address the complex nuances of plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

Armed with this extensive training and 26 years of experience practicing in the Austin area, my skills are fine-tuned. I’ve probably addressed just about every deformity, complication and challenge and have strived to offer the most natural results for my patients. Consequently. I’ve built my practice primarily through word of mouth referrals from colleagues and prior patients who refer their friends.

If you are considering plastic surgery, make sure that your surgeon is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (www.abplasticsurgery.org) and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (www.plasticsurgery.org).
