With Thanksgiving just around the corner, here are some things to keep in mind with your holiday meal.

TURKEY & GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE:
GOOD: Turkey is packed with protein, and green beans, mushrooms, and onions are all healthy.
BAD: Turkey & beans can easily get stuck between your teeth, so remember to floss afterwards.

CRANBERRY SAUCE:
GOOD: It's a tasty Thanksgiving tradition (and gives you an excuse to sing "Zombie" or "Linger").
BAD: Cranberries are naturally tart, so sugar or sugar substitutes are often added to recipes. This side dish can be sticky, acidic and may temporarily stain your teeth.

YAMS:
GOOD: Sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamins A and C, which help keep your gums healthy.
BAD: Candied yam recipes call for marshmallows. Sticky foods can damage your teeth since they tend to stay on your teeth longer than other types of food.

MACARONI AND CHEESE & MASHED POTATOES:
GOOD: Many recipes call for cheese and milk. The calcium from these ingredients helps strengthen teeth. Potatoes have vitamins C, B6, and potassium.
BAD: White pastas & potatoes are starchy and can leave sugar behind on your teeth, which cavity-causing bacteria love, so brushing & flossing after your meal is important to remove residues from your teeth. .

PUMPKIN PIE:
GOOD: Pumpkin has Vitamin A, which helps keep your gums healthy and builds the hard outer shell of your teeth (enamel).
BAD: There’s the added sugar in the pie itself. Eating sweets shortly after meals helps keep saliva flowing to wash away leftover food.

7 TIPS FOR A HEALTHY HALLOWEEN (and all year long):

1. Enjoy Halloween treats with meals
(* Extra saliva made while you’re eating full meals help rinse away leftover bits of candy and cavity-causing acids.)

2. Don’t snack on sugar
(* Frequent snacking can boost cavity risks.)

3. Skip sticky or sour candies
(* Avoid hard, sticky, and/or gummy sweets that stay in your mouth for a long time. These cling to your teeth, elevating cavity risks.)

4. A little chocolate is fine
(* Chocolate doesn’t stick to your teeth as readily as other candies. Dark & semisweet varieties have less cavity-causing sugar vs. milk chocolate.)

5. Don’t keep a big stash of candy on hand
(* Take away the temptation to continuously snack.)

6. Chew sugar-free gum with the ADA Seal
(* Enjoying sugarless gum for 20 mins after eating helps prevent tooth decay thanks to the extra saliva your mouth produces.)

7. Choose fun giveaways that aren’t candy
(* The sweetest gesture might be a longer-lasting item like themed stickers, coloring books and pens/pencils.)

With the summer in full swing, it's important to drink plenty of water! Here are some fun facts to help motivate you to keep hydrated.

It Strengthens Your Teeth:
Drinking water with fluoride (“nature’s cavity fighter”) is one of the easiest and most beneficial things you can do to help prevent cavities.

It Keeps Your Mouth Clean:
Water cleans your mouth with every sip. It washes away leftover food and residue that cavity-causing bacteria are looking for. It also dilutes the acids produced by the bacteria in your mouth.

It Fights Dry Mouth:
Saliva is your mouth’s first defense against tooth decay. It washes away leftover food, helps you swallow with ease and keeps your teeth strong by washing them with calcium, phosphate and fluoride.

🎶 Did you know Dr. Rho has been a proud provider for the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) for several years?

HAAM is an amazing organization that helps local Austin musicians access healthcare—including dental services. It's one of the ways the city supports the artists who give so much to our culture and community. 💜

Dr. Rho grew up playing music and dancing—so the arts aren’t just something she supports, they’re a big part of who she is. Being able to give back through HAAM and care for Austin’s creative community is truly an honor.

Update on Dental X-Ray Safety:

As of 2024, leading dental organizations such as the American Dental Association (ADA) no longer recommend the routine use of lead aprons or thyroid collars for dental X-rays.

Why the change?
Thanks to advances in technology, our modern digital X-ray machines use focused beams and ultra-low doses of radiation, making scatter to other parts of the body extremely unlikely. Current research shows that additional shielding, like lead aprons or thyroid collars, offers little to no added benefit—and may even interfere with optimal imaging.

What this means for you:
At our practice, your safety and comfort come first. While protective aprons and thyroid collars are no longer considered necessary, we’re happy to provide them upon request. Just let our team know during your visit!

If you have questions or concerns, we’re here to discuss them.

Your safety. Your choice. Your smile.

Brushing twice a day and cleaning between your teeth daily helps to get rid of the hundreds of types of bacteria that naturally live in your mouth and can cause bad breath. When you eat, bacteria feed on the food left in your mouth and leaves a foul-smelling waste product behind.

𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡
Over-the-counter mouthwashes can help kill bacteria or temporarily mask bad breath. Unfortunately, this is only a temporary solution. The longer you wait to brush and floss away food in your mouth, the more likely your breath will offend.

Saliva helps to wash out your mouth. Try eating healthy foods that require a lot of chewing, like carrots or apples. You can also try sugar-free gum or sugar-free candies.

Giving up this dangerous habit is good for your body in many ways. Not only will you have better breath, but you’ll also have a better quality of life.

Regular checkups allow your dentist to detect any problems such as gum disease or dry mouth and stop them before they become more serious.

Our office takes most dental insurance plans and will file claims for your visits.
