Our next veteran feature is David Helfert, 79, U.S. Navy.

Helfert is an Army brat, born in Texas, but gained a worldly perspective as a kid when he lived abroad in Columbia, South America. Helfert entered the University of Texas in 1963 as a Naval R.O.T.C Midshipman and freshman baseball player for the Texas Longhorns. According to Helfert, “following consultation with the Dean of Students, I took a break from the rigors of academia and went on active duty with the U.S. Navy in January 1965.” His service included nearly a year as Cruise Director on the scenic waterways of South Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Helfert was awarded the Purple Heart after he was wounded during a mortar attack. He was also awarded a Bronze Star and came home to serve his country as a television news reporter and political consultant. Helfert wrote and produced media in more than 120 political campaigns, served as a communications director in the Clinton Administration, and two Members of the U.S. House, and the House Appropriations Committee. He has taught political communication and public affairs writing at American and Johns Hopkins Universities in Washington, DC, the LBJ School at the University of Texas, Texas State University, and has been a visiting lecturer at U.S. Naval Academy.

Today's veteran feature is Colonel Jean Diebolt, 87, U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps 1967 – 1999, stationed at Cam Rahn Bay Vietnam 1969 – 1970.

When we think of Army nurses, many think of Loretta Swit’s portrayal of “Hot Lips” Houlihan when she served as a M*A*S*H nurse during the Korean War. With a father in the military, Diebolt followed in his footsteps, serving as a USAF nurse in Vietnam until she retired from the military in 1999.

Like many war-time nurses, the military helped Diebolt finance her education in nursing school. Little did she know, her decision to join the military would carry her to Vietnam, and later benefit people in rural Texas, when she opened a clinic in East Texas where she served patients without proper medical and dental care.

Diebolt said she enjoyed working in medicine in Vietnam because nurses could do procedures only doctors could do at home. She also tells funny stories about stealing jeeps in Vietnam and heading to the beach. At 87, she still has that adventurous spirit as she travels the world and continues to widen her circle of friends.
