Deep Massage Society

Deep Massage Society Professional FB page of David Lauterstein, co-author, The Memory Palace of Bones & Deep Massage Book

While I enjoy "Deep Massage Society", over the years I have become less happy with facebook. When I post something here, due to facebook algorithms, many people who follow this page, never receive the writings. So, two years ago I started a free newsletter, "Putting the Soul Back in the Body". It is there that I put virtually all of my new writings, that previously would have been on Deep Massage Society. So if you like this page, and want to assure that you will receive basically all my new writing, please subscribe to the free newsletter - I think you'll enjoy it even more! https://www.david-lauterstein.com/newsletter-signup

The ideas on this page and in the newsletter are drawn from a similar perspective as my teaching and my book - The Deep Massage Book, subtitled "How to Combine Structure and Energy in Bodywork", which singularly explores a new philosophy and practice of massage, describing an approach to touch therapy that affects clients deeply, not necessarily with more pressure, but with a more profound and vital connection. In a world where virtual reality holds prominence, hunger for the experience of actual reality and kindness becomes more pronounced and urgently necessary.

The Memory Palace of Bones: Exploring Embodiment through the Skeletal System Paperback

by Jeff Rockwell (Author), David Lauterstein (Author)
4.5 out of 5 stars (22)

The Memory Palace of Bones: Exploring Embodiment Through the Skeletal System is an unprecedented exploration of the anatomy of the bones of the body, and a unique set of reflections on the role each individual bone plays in our lives, looking at both its physical and energetic contributions.

Written and presented in an imaginative and highly readable style, the book describes each individual bone and, where appropriate, the surrounding joints. It combines the anatomical expertise of the authors with their appreciation for the beauty of the body, presenting a unique perspective that values extensive clinical expertise as well as imagination as a source of wisdom and depth.

Seeing and discussing bones as a wisdom source is a topic that until now has never been systematically covered. The Memory Palace of Bones will be read and treasured by practitioners and students of massage therapy, bodywork, movement professionals, Zero Balancers, chiropractors, osteopaths, Rolfers, body-centered psychotherapists, students and teachers of yoga, performing artists and other health professionals as well as by laymen wanting a greater understanding of and connection to their bodies' wisdom and poetry.

May we work collectively and individually to root out the origins of our long history of human beings being rigid and cruel to themselves and each other.

ZERO BALANCING I and II - July 17-19 and 24-26 AT THE LAUTERSTEIN-CONWAY MASSAGE SCHOOL

I just had the most wonderful, big group for a workshop on the Iliopsoas. The next class I'm teaching is a combination of Zero Balancing I and II in Austin in mid-July. ZB I and II are the core 50 of the 100 hours required for certification in Zero Balancing.

Zero Balancing is, for me, the most advanced and interesting form of advanced bodywork. It works with a deep faith in the client's ability to let go from inside-out. It focuses on the connective tissues of the muscles, joints and bones. It refines your touch and awareness of both energy and structure in ways that will vastly benefit your work and your life!

The Lauterstein-Conway Massage School offers informative and enriching workshops to complete your massage therapy continuing education hours.

Democracy means "strength of the common people." This poem by Lucille Clifton reminds us of this - born from her strength and the bones whose common form we share.
Another way that Zero Balancing speaks to the deepest, important level of our being.

Great ida Rolf quotes:
“This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”

“Go around the problem; get the system sufficiently resilient so that it is able to change, and it will change, It doesn’t have to be forced. It’s that forcing that you have to avoid at all costs.”

and a quote that presaged Zero Balancing -
“When the pelvis is not balanced, we do not have the upward thrust that creates zero balance, the sense of weightlessness that can be experienced in the body. When the pelvis is aberrated, it does not allow this equipoise, this tranquillity in experience that a balanced pelvis shows. The combined forces acting on a balanced pelvis are in a moment of inertia near zero. It is always in dynamic action, but the forces balance out to near zero.”

ROOTS AND BRANCHES

was recorded live in the studio and accompanied three of my favorite graduated therapists doing massage in the studio simultaneously. So, as far as I know, it is the only recording actually made while accompanying massage. Because of that it works incredibly well to be played while doing massage or bodywork or just for relaxing.
I called it "Roots and Branches", among other reasons, because it gently draws on all my roots in my life and in music: blues, Indian music, classical, and the "experimental folk music" done particularly by Robbie Basho and John Fahey.

Reminding you all that my recording is free on youtube and spotify.

Lynette Brannon (1947-2026)

The Austin massage and bodywork community has lost a long-time pioneer and advocate. Lynette Brannon was, among other things, an early Trager practitioner and a deep soul. I'm lucky to have known her and respected her work and her self since the late 1980's!
Lynette, thank you so much for making the world a better place!
