This month’s lactation tip is all about pumps! We get so many questions about which pump is best, and the simple answer to that is; the pump that works best for your body is the best one for you. However, it’s important to understand the what’s and why’s of the different pumps.

Suction Pump - These were initially marketed as a milk collectors and helped people were able to passively build their milk stash. In recent years though, lactation professionals have seen people having an accidental oversupply caused by these suction types of pumps. So, it’s important to recognize that the Haakaa and other pumps like this are just that; a pump!
Pros - If it works for you, you can put this on after baby feeds or when the baby is on one side to get the letdown on the other side and store your milk.
Cons - It is really uncomfortable for some people. When used simultaneously with breastfeeding, it might take from what baby would eat on the 2nd side.

Hand Pump - We LOVE a hand pump! These are so handy to have in your bag, keep around when the power goes out (looking at you ERCOT), and anytime you need to relieve a little and still stay attuned to your body.
Pros: Easy to use, lightweight, and portable
Cons: Not as efficient as a double electric pump

Double Electric Pump - These are your primary pumps, your powerhouses. These guys put in the work and provide great stimulation to either initiate or maintain milk supply.
Pros - Very effective and often covered by insurance.
Cons - Learning curve, big and bulky, and not cheap.

Wearable Electric Pump - Who doesn’t love a wearable?? These are fantastic once your milk supply is established and you’re on the go!
Pros: Pump on the go! Very easy to use anywhere.
Cons: Doesn’t yield as much as your primary pump, sometimes harder for those with large chests to use.

Whatever you use, know you have options, there are lots of choices out there, and make sure you work with an IBCLC to ensure the right fit!

Happy Birthday, Mackenzie 🎉✨

Today we’re celebrating the warmth you bring, the laughter you spark, and the calm you carry into every space you enter. You have a way of making people feel seen, supported, and a little lighter — even on the hardest postpartum days.

You move through this work with so much heart and intention, showing families that care can feel like comfort, community, and deep exhale moments. And when you’re not pouring into others, you’re soaking up life with your toddler, chasing fresh air, finding joy in stories, and laughing at the little things that make life sweet.

May this year bring you rest, growth, big dreams unfolding, and plenty of cake in between 🎂🌿
We’re so grateful to walk alongside you at Austin Doula Care.

Help us shower Mackenzie with birthday love in the comments!💛

Meet Chelsea!!
Chelsea became a postpartum doula first in 2008 after the birth of her 2nd child. In 2016, her kiddos were old enough that she could enter the birth world. She also became a Certified Lactation Counselor at that time and in 2017 became a Hypnobirthing Instructor.

A little about Chels...
She is a Mom of 2 incredible humans ages 18 and 20.
She was born in Austin (at St. David’s Main)!
She is always wearing green, loves to travel internationally and be outside in nature. If it's a nice day out, you just might find her paddleboarding on town lake.

When it comes to work...
Post birth recovery ritual is epsom salt bath, a glass of wine, and some dark chocolate.
Is a little witchy and several times has accurately predicted/manifested the day/time of birth.
After her divorce, she wanted to create community for other single and choice parents. She created the Single/Choice Happy Hour and leads that once a month.

Loves: middle of the night baby snuggles, graphic T-shirts with fun commentary, singing in her women’s choir, doing all the NYT daily word puzzles, theme parties and dressing up for Halloween.

What else do you want to know about Chelsea?

What is HypnoBirthing? We get asked this question a lot, so the best way to answer is from the mouth of the instructor!!

Welcome to our new series, Meet the Doulas!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Kim Borchert, CD (DTI), CBM (BFW), Student IBCLC; what does that all mean? Certified Birth & Postpartum Doula, Certified Childbirth Mentor, and Student International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
I am the co-founder of Austin Doula Care! I was inspired to become a doula after the birth of my first child, 23 years ago. After waiting for my babies to grow a little, I became a doula in April 2015.
A little about me...
Fun fact, I was pregnant, breastfeeding, or BOTH for 14 years!
I’ve been married for 24 years to the coolest guy, who just happens to be the I.T. guy for Austin Doula Care.
The best vacation I’ve been on was going to London and my bucket list vacation is going to Scotland!
My favorite client gift ever was a bidet with a note saying “something for your bu****le after looking at mine for so many hours”
When I’m not working or doing school work, you can find me doing pottery, knitting, or finding a body of water to float in.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When it comes to work...
My favorite thing I do these days is teaching Birthing from Within, Feeding Your Baby, VBAC Prep, facilitating WTF is This?, and my IBCLC training.
Mentoring new families as they prepare for this journey into parenthood & then holding them and offering evidence based support as they learn how to feed their babies is such heart work and really fuels my soul.
I have attended over 200 births, supported way more families postpartum (both in home and through postpartum groups) and taught at least that many over the years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One thing I wish people knew about this work is that your doula needs down time! This is the best way to ensure she is rested and ready to come to you when you’re in labor! It’s one of the reasons I mentor doulas, to help them (hopefully) avoid the pitfalls I have fallen into over the years.

There are so many questions about lactation and feeding babies that we want to help break down some of the myths, questions, and worries we hear from new and expecting parents!

Today’s lactation tip is around the frequency of eating. We hear from parents all the time that they are worried their babies aren’t getting enough because they are eating all the time. Let’s break down what’s happening!

When your baby is born, their stomachs are so tiny, like the size of a cherry. They can only take in 5 - 10mL (.5 -1 teaspoon!) per feed! Tiny stomachs = frequent feedings.
By day 3 their stomachs are the size of a walnut and are able to take in 22-27mL. This means they are asking for more by eating more frequently.
At one week we have an apricot tummy and they can take in 30mL, which is a full ounce and by 1 month, it’s the size of an egg and they are regularly taking 90-150mL (3-5oz!!).

Every time they go through a growth spurt, it will feel like they are eating non-stop and that is because they are telling your body to make more milk. This lasts for a couple of days and then their feeding will space back out again.

If you’re concerned, always check in with an IBCLC and your pediatrician. Weighed feeds and expert eyes can help ease your mind and give you tools to keep going!

You know that feeling when you get a new notebook and look at the blank pages? They are so full of promise and excitement because nothing has been written yet!
Here we are, the first day of a new year and I feel much the same. Standing at the threshold of something new and unknown can be equal parts exciting and terrifying.
Just as we stand with you when you cross the threshold into labor, birth, and parenthood, we are here to stand with you in the promise of a new year, a new beginning, and a shedding of all that no longer serves.

Over the course of this month, you will notice some changes in our social media. We are coming back to where we started, connection. We will be creating content to hopefully connect with clients, colleagues, and friends. We have a vision for 2026 and a big part of it lies in community, connection, and intention.

We look forward to seeing what unfolds for all of us individually and Austin Doula Care as a whole.

Happy New Year to all of you. Thank you for being with us, supporting us, and allowing us into your lives. My new year love letter to each of you reading this, is the ability to find rest and peace in the chaos and turmoil that is our current world. Take care of yourselves, whatever that looks like for you.

xo,
Kim

As we close out 2025, we have so much to be grateful for! While this year was hard on so many levels, the resilience, strength, and determination we witnessed over and over gave us hope.
We are honored to support each family that comes our way; whether it’s for birth or postpartum work, classes, or support groups; we love being part of your path to parenthood!
We can’t wait to see what 2026 brings for Austin Doula Care and our community.
We wish you all a healthy, happy, and safe New Year!
