Were you forced to travel outside your home state to access an ab*rtion?

Was your misc*rriage/pregnancy l*ss made more complicated by legal issues?

Are you experiencing an unwanted pregn*ncy and conflicted, confused, or scared about the next steps?

These experiences may leave you feeling disempowered, outraged, hopeless, and/or an array of other challenging emotions. You deserve safety and support to process what you’re living through. If you’re a TX resident and answered “yes” to any of the above, I would be honored to offer you reduced-fee mental health counseling.

Most of us are taught a pretty simplistic model of emotions: you can feel happy, sad, mad, glad... This model is limiting (as though we experience just one emotion at a time!) and can be shaming (as though we should be able to describe our current feeling in a single word at any given moment!) In reality, human emotions are a lot more complex than that. We're capable of feeling any number of emotions at once. For example, disappointment and hope, loneliness and gratitude, fear and excitement. It can be tough to untangle one emotion from another. Sometimes, you might not know what you're feeling at all. A good therapist can help you identify and make space for each and every one of your emotions. Support to feel your emotions in the presence of a safe and compassionate other can lead to greater self understanding, a decrease in depression, and better overall health.

The idea of ✨personal transformation✨ might sound intimidating.

Transformation is the process of thorough, drastic change. Many of us have negative associations with change: an unwelcome, unexpected, and uncomfortable shift in some aspect of life; being asked or ordered to "change" (read: "be different") by another person. This isn't the sort of change we strive for in therapy. While therapy might sometimes mean sitting with discomfort, it's not about figuring out what's "wrong with you" and how to "be different" in order to be better. Good therapy supports and guides your personal growth. Growth does require change, however, this change is at your pace and on your terms. And you won't have to face it alone. If you stick with therapy, you may experience the sort of growth that feels transformative as you watch your life change for the better.

So, yes, personal transformation sounds like a big deal because it is! It's changing in all the big, small, noticeable, subtle, and important ways that are harder to navigate on your own. It's growing into yourself 🦋
creates lovely minimalist images accompanied by meaningful messages.

It's normal to feel powerless in the face of great injustice. It's okay to feel overwhelmed. Many want to help, but are stifled by fear of saying the wrong thing and causing more harm. Even those who care deeply for others sometimes feel defensive when confronted with their own biased thoughts and feelings. I challenge you now to lean in to this discomfort. Be brave in asking yourself difficult questions and by starting difficult conversations. Listen to the voices of the underrepresented and seek to understand. And, remember: you can effect change, even in your smallest actions.

This guide from Courtney Ahn, a talented illustrator and woman of color, helps people like me understand how to use our privilege for good. If you’re questioning what you can do to help on an everyday basis, please give it a read.
