Reiki as Nervous System Safety in an Overstimulated World

There’s a moment at the beginning of every Reiki session…
Before anything shifts… before the breath deepens… before the body softens…
There’s a quiet pause.
And in that space, it feels like the body is simply waiting…
waiting to feel safe.

We live in a world that asks so much of us—mentally, emotionally, energetically. Even when life looks “calm” on the outside, the nervous system is often still running in the background… processing, anticipating, holding.
And over time, that constant subtle activation becomes a baseline.
Not because something is wrong—
but because the body has learned to stay ready.

The Science: Returning to Regulation
From a physiological perspective, many people are living in a state of low-grade sympathetic activation—what we know as fight-or-flight.
It doesn’t always look like panic or anxiety.

Sometimes it looks like:
Difficulty fully relaxing
Shallow breathing
Mental overactivity
Holding tension in the body
Trouble sleeping or fully restoring

Reiki creates a space where the body no longer needs to maintain that state.
As the session begins, I often feel the shift before the client even notices it.
The breath slows.
The heart rate softens.
Muscles begin to release.
The nervous system transitions into the parasympathetic state—the body’s natural mode for healing, repair, and restoration.
This is not something I force.
It’s something the body remembers how to do.

The Spirit: Remembering Safety
What I experience through Reiki goes beyond the physical response.
There is a moment—sometimes subtle, sometimes profound—where it feels like the body receives a message:
“You are safe now.”
And in that moment, something lets go.
Not because we are fixing anything.
But because the body no longer needs to hold on.
This is where Reiki feels like more than a modality.
It feels like a remembering.
A return to the body’s natural rhythm.
A reconnection to the part of us that already knows how to heal.

Clients will often ask me about the sensations they feel during a session.
Warmth.
Tingling.
Emotional waves.
Tears that come without a story.
These experiences are not random.
They are the body unwinding.
When the nervous system feels safe, it allows stored tension—physical, emotional, energetic—to move.
Not all at once. Not forcefully.
But intelligently.
The body knows what it’s ready to release.
And Reiki provides the environment for that release to happen naturally.

The Power of Consistency
One of the most important things I’ve come to understand is this:
Safety is something we can practice.
It’s not just something we wait to feel.
Even a few minutes a day of intentional stillness, breath, and connection can begin to retrain the nervous system.
This is why I’m so passionate about integrating daily practices—whether through Reiki, meditation, or simple moments of awareness.
Because healing doesn’t only happen in sessions.
It happens in the small, consistent moments where the body is given permission to soften.

A Gentle Return
Reiki, at its core, is not about doing more.
It’s about allowing less.
Less effort.
Less holding.
Less protection.

Join Lindsay of Shuniya Yoga Collective and Amber of Olé Santé for an afternoon of cleansing, clearing & community!

This process is about releasing old energy that no longer serves. Clearing this outdated energy gives the new, relevant energy space to come in. A great way to start this process is with our physical space - think about cleaning out your closet. When you get rid of items that you no longer wear, you release old energy that has attached to these items. It leaves room for a refreshing reset, both physically and energetically and allows new energy to flow.

Let's face it - letting go can be challenging. Allow the collective energy cultivated by this gathering to support you in this effort! Rest assured, each of your released items will take on a new life and be treasured again! We can trade items, if we find something that matches our current energetic vibration, and all remaining items will be donated to a wonderful local non-profit - Austin Pets Alive!

Here's how to participate:

STEP 1: CLEANSE YOUR PHYSICAL SPACE
Select some gently worn items from your closet that no longer serve you and are ready to be shared with others.
STEP 2: UPCYCLE & TRADE WITH OTHERS
Maybe something else is calling to you now? Bring home something new! All items remaining will be donated to Austin Pets Alive.
STEP 3: CLEAR YOUR ENERGETIC SPACE
Further pamper and reward yourself with a cleansing breathwork (pranayama) meditation followed by a soothing reiki-infused sound bath, led by Amber - our gift to you!

Arrive towards the beginning of the event to set-out your items and see what others are contributing. Try on clothes or simply take home a few new treasures that bring you joy. Enjoy this opportunity to connect and chat with community! Meditation / Sound Bath will start around 3:00pm for those who have pre-registered.

Reiki:

Where Science Meets Spirit

When I work with Reiki—whether I’m offering it to someone else or practicing it on myself—I experience something that lives beautifully between science and spirit.

On the scientific side, we know that Reiki creates a profound calming response in the nervous system. As the body relaxes, the parasympathetic nervous system becomes more active. Heart rate slows, breathing deepens, and the body begins to shift out of the stress response. When this happens, the body moves into a state where healing, repair, and regulation become possible.

But there is another layer to this work that is just as real.

When I place my hands and allow Reiki to flow, I often feel as if I am reminding the spirit that it is safe to return fully to the body. In our modern lives, many people live in a constant state of tension, worry, or emotional protection. Parts of us pull back. We hold ourselves tightly, sometimes without even realizing it.

Reiki gently dissolves that tension.

It feels as though light is being invited back into places where the body has been holding or guarding itself. The nervous system relaxes, and at the same time the energetic body begins to soften and open.

Many clients notice physical shifts during a session.

Sometimes there are small movements in the body—tiny twitches, subtle adjustments, changes in breathing, or deep sighs. From a physiological perspective, these can be signs of the nervous system regulating itself and the body releasing stored tension.

Energetically, I often experience it as energy flowing back into places where it had become stagnant or withdrawn.

It can feel almost like a gentle current of light moving into the body again.

There are moments where the body seems to resist this process. We all carry places within us where we have been protecting ourselves—areas where surrender feels difficult because of past experiences, fears, or the unknown path ahead.

In those moments, Reiki does not force anything.

Instead, it creates a field of safety.

Within that field, the body and spirit are invited to soften together. The nervous system regulates. The mind quiets. And the deeper wisdom within each person begins to guide the process.

This is why Reiki often feels like a partnership.

I am not the one doing the healing. Rather, I am holding space and allowing the energy to flow while partnering with the intelligence of your body and the wisdom of your spirit.

Something larger than either of us moves through the session.

My role is simply to be present, grounded, and open—allowing that current of compassion, light, and life force to move where it is needed most.

What continues to amaze me is that every session feels slightly different.

Some days the experience is deeply physical—clients feel warmth, heaviness, or the sensation of energy moving through their bodies.

Other days the shifts are emotional or spiritual—memories surface, insights arise, or a deep sense of peace replaces long-held anxiety.

But the common thread is always the same:

Reiki gently reminds the body and spirit of something they already know.

You are safe.
You are supported.
And the light within you knows how to find its way home.

✨ Where Science Meets Spirit

One of the things I love most about Reiki is that it exists in this beautiful space where science and spirit meet.

On one level, we know what is happening physically. The nervous system begins to soften. Breathing slows. The body moves out of survival mode and into a state where it can regulate, repair, and restore.

But there is another layer that is harder to measure and yet so deeply felt.

When I work with Reiki, it often feels like I’m gently reminding the spirit that it is safe to return fully to the body.

So many of us move through life holding tension, guarding parts of ourselves, or carrying things we don’t even realize we’ve been holding.

And then something beautiful happens.

During a session I’ll often feel subtle shifts — little movements, deep breaths, a softening in the body. Sometimes it feels like light moving back into places where energy had become stagnant or protective.

Every session has its own magic.

Sometimes it’s deep relaxation.
Sometimes it’s emotional release.
Sometimes it’s simply a quiet remembering of peace.

What I love most is that Reiki never forces healing.

Instead, it creates a safe space where the wisdom of your body and the intelligence of spirit meet and begin working together again.

I simply have the honor of holding that space and witnessing the beautiful unfolding that happens within each person.

A Loving Reminder to Prioritize Your Peace

So often, we show up for everyone else—our loved ones, our friends, our coworkers—with open hearts and open arms. We hold space, we listen, we give our time and energy freely.

But here’s something I want you to pause and really feel today:

You are just as important as the people you care for.
Your peace matters. Your rest matters. Your well-being is worthy of the same tenderness and priority.

When we give so much, it’s easy to forget ourselves. But healing, balance, and joy begin when we stop waiting for the “right” time to care for ourselves and start choosing little daily moments to honor our inner world.

Here are a few gentle ways to begin:

🌿 Take five minutes to simply be—no phone, no to-do list, just you and your breath. It might feel small, but these moments reset your nervous system and bring you back to center.

🌿 Say no when you need to. Saying no isn’t selfish—it’s honest. It’s a boundary that protects your peace and makes space for what truly supports you.

🌿 Prioritize quiet joy. Read a few pages of a book, sip your coffee slowly, step outside and feel the sun on your face. You don’t have to earn these moments—they already belong to you.
