Thank you to the brave Kambô Warriors that joined our small group Spring Equinox Ceremony today! ☀️🐸☀️

Spring Equinox/Ostara is my favorite holiday in the ancient traditions of celebrating the Wheel of the Year.

Every part of me feels “online” and excited for new beginnings, emerging from the shadowy cocoon of winter into the LIGHT of Spring.

Today was such a special ceremony, being the last day of the Zodiac year and day between the last Full Moon of the Zodiac year and Equinox tomorrow.

Truly an incredible opportunity to shed the last layers of shadows from winter and the past 12 months that are not meant to travel with us into a fresh new cycle with the next zodiac year and Spring season ahead.

I’m feeling electric with gratitude, yet so humbled and tender hearted at the beauty I witnessed in each one of these beautiful souls.

It takes great courage to show up in these ceremonies and do our deepest inner healing work as we’re being witnessed by (sometimes) strangers.

But we all leave the ceremony as Medicine Family, held by our bonds of love Kambôcita shared with us.

Are we more than human? 🐆🪶🦅

Re-member: Your body is an ecosystem of ancestors.

Every one of your cells holds an ancient and anarchic love story.

Around 2.7 billion years ago free-living prokaryotes melted into one another to form the mitochondria and organelles of the cells that build our bodies today.

Although I’ve been home integrating for a little over a month now since working with Chuchuhuasi and Ayahuasca in a Master Plant Dieta in the Peruvian Amazon…

I continue to wake up every morning feeling my ancient ancestral cousins of the jungle plants & animals still very much ALIVE inside of me.

A common theme in my medicine journeys was connecting with Gaian consciousness.

Becoming Mother Nature herself…

Experiencing the omni-present umbilical connecting to all of Creation.

Becoming the plants, animals, & elements…

And then I remember these beautiful words from poet Sophie Strand that encapsulates my experience perfectly…

Happy December! 🍄 It’s the holiday season, and I’m thinking of mushrooms. The psychedelic Amanita Muscaria to be exact. 🍄

This distinctive, red and white mushroom has a colorful history rooted in deep mythology and lore. (Not entirely surprising, given that it looks like something a princess would sit upon.)

At first glance, Amanita muscaria and the Christmas holiday appear to be an unlikely duo.

But would it be too far-fetched to propose that the story of our modern Santa Claus, the omnipotent man who travels the globe in one night bearing gifts is linked to a hallucinogenic mushroom-eating shaman from the Arctic?

As it turns out, the shamanic rituals of the Sami people of Lapland, a region in northern Finland known for its wintry climate and conifer forests, bear an uncanny semblance to the narratives of Santa and Christmas that we have come to know.

The use of Amanita muscaria as an entheogen (that is, a drug used to bring about a spiritual experience) would enable the shamans to act as intermediaries between the spirit and human world, bringing gifts of healing and problem-solving.

Various accounts describe the shaman and the rituals performed in ways that are fascinatingly similar to the narrative of Santa.

An all-knowing man who defies space and time? Flying reindeer? Reindeer-drawn sleds? Climbing down the chimney? The giving of gifts? The tales of the Sami shamans have it all.

I can remember as a child being captivated by the festive spirit of Christmas, the glowing lights and the stories of Santa Claus.

But as we grow older, we numb ourselves to that exuberant wonder and awe we felt as children. Exploring the unlikely roots of our Christmas folklore has given me a new perspective on the narrative I remember from childhood.

So, once upon a time, Santa was related in lineage to a psychedelic mushroom eating shaman from Lapland?

Maybe there’s more to Santa than we had previously acknowledged. Like his shamanic forefathers, perhaps he’s giving us a gift - one of knowledge and reflection, and one we certainly can’t buy.

This Christmas, I think we should make room for one more story: one about mushrooms, shamans and ancient rituals. 🍄
