Happy Halloween Everyone!!! (Or should I say "Happy Samhain"!?!)
Did you know that we celebrate Halloween on the wrong day? Traditionally, cultures around the world celebrated a holiday on the day that marked the midway-point of the Autumn season... Which is today, November 6th... not October 31st.
The Halloween that we are familiar with was set on October 31st by the Pope Gregory when he developed his calendar for the western world a couple of centuries ago. But historically, cultures around the world celebrated what we might consider Halloween on THIS day... the mid-point of Autumn.
In many cultures, today is celebrated as a day of perfect balance (which is why they say the dead can come back and roam the countryside on this night). In many other cultures it is considered to be their the first day of their New Year... while in other cultures as the end of summer.
In northern cultures, because of this perfect balance of energies, it was thought that the veil between the living and the dead was at its most thin, allowing deceased relatives and spirits to return to Earth and roam among us. Spooky, right?
So several cultures had a tradition of having “Dumb Suppers”, where the family would invite their departed relatives into their home where the dead spirits could share a feast and be entertained by acts of singing and dancing by the children. That seems nice.
Fun.
